Meet Queue: Brie Larson Is About To Storm The Oscar Race With ‘Room’

Brie Larson has been pounding the proverbial pavement for a long time. She started out as a plucky tween actress with a flair for comedy, then became a mumblecore sweetheart, and has appeared in some showy supporting gigs in major blockbuster fare. The actress even had a brush with teen pop stardom! Lest we all forget, she put out an album back in 2004 called, Finally Out of P.E., which is unfortunately unavailable to stream on Spotify.

But Larson’s big breakout moment seems to be upon us. The actress dazzled critics at the Toronto International Film Festival (or TIFF) this weekend with her performance in Room. Could Larson be nominated for an Oscar? If so, she’ll likely be competing with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, and Julianne Moore. If you want to see more Brie Larson before she enters the Hollywood big league, we’ve compiled five titles on streaming just for you. It’s kind of like a “meet cute” in a romantic comedy, but because it’s all streaming, we’re calling it your “meet queue.” So get ready to fall in love with Brie Larson…

United States of Tara (2009-2011)

Brie Larson has been acting since she was in grade school, but her first big splashy part was in United States of Tara. The Diablo Cody series starred Toni Collette as Tara Gregson, a woman whose life is put into disorder by multiple personality disorder. Larson played Kate, Tara’s rebellious teen daughter who lashes out with sex. [Watch United States of Tara on Netflix]

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

Edgar Wright’s delightful adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World may not have made a huge dent at the box office, but it lives on as cult favorite for its brilliantly inventive tone and exceptionally packed cast. Brie Larson was picked to play one of the tale’s most iconic characters: Scott’s tempestuous ex-girlfriend, Envy Adams. As the story goes, Envy left Scott (and their Toronto band) to reinvent herself as a vampy rock star. [Where to Stream Scott Pilgrim vs. The World]

21 Jump Street (2012)

Most audiences got their first good look at Brie Larson when she co-starred opposite Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in the hilarious film reboot of 21 Jump Street. Larson played Molly, a high school student who helps Tatum and Hill track down the source of an underground drug ring at her school. Molly also winds up being the object of Hill’s character’s affection. [Where to Stream 21 Jump Street]

Short Term 12 (2013)

Brie Larson spent years building her reputation as a talented comedy performer, but what made most critics sit up and take notice of the actress was her gorgeous work in the indie drama Short Term 12. Larson plays Grace, a worker in a group facility for teens who must confront her own troubled past as she debates whether or not to have a child of her own. Larson won a slew of awards for the performance and it catapulted her into the major leagues of up-and-coming actresses to watch. [Watch Short Term 12 on Netflix]

Room (2015)

I don’t know if you know this, but the Oscar race has already started, and Brie Larson is officially part of the conversation. Larson is getting huge raves for her beautiful performance in Room. The actress stars as “Ma,” a young woman who has been kidnapped and kept in a garden shed for seven years. After being sexually abused by her captor, she gives birth to little Jack (Jacob Tremblay), whom she raises with as much love and optimism as one can when one’s whole world is one room. It’s supposedly really good and Larson shines. Brie Larson’s moment is nigh! (Okay, Brie Larson will have her moment when Room opens in theaters nationwide October 16.) Check out the emotionally-searing trailer below.
