If that annoying theater nerd from high school grew up and became famous, you would get Neil Patrick Harris. And because America is in awe of his awards show hosting abilities (well, at least until tonight, which has proven that there’s a curse on anyone who attempts to host the Oscars), we’ve got a four-hour spectacle in which he can attempt to entertain us. While he usually goes the song-and-dance route (seen when he has hosted the Tonys and the Emmys), he also managed to continue his Bad Boy Tour, in which he’s tried very hard to show some edge to his otherwise vanilla exterior.
In the last year, he’s starred on Broadway as the foul-mouthed titular drag superstar in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (winning a Tony in the process), had his own arc on American Horror Story: Freak Show as a murderous and deranged magician, and played a total creep in David Fincher’s Gone Girl — and stripped down in the process. But his finest role to date may be failed Oscar host (joining the ranks of David Letterman, Jon Stewart, James Franco, and Anne Hathaway). But at least he stripped down to his tighty-whities for a Birdman-inspired bit.
