Too Cool For School: The Fictional Teachers We Wish Were Real

It’s that time of year again…back to school (dun dun dun)! Grab a seat, and take out your paper and pencils, because it’s time to take note of the teachers we wish would appear on our school schedules this year. We’re talking teachers that inspire us, teachers that give us the will to learn, and even a few that might make a guest appearance or two in our romantic fantasies.

1

Mr. Keating, 'Dead Poets Society'

John Keating Dead Poets Society
Everett Collection

Ripping chapters out of textbooks, standing on desks, and addressing him as “O Captain, my Captain?” Yeah, that’s a normal day with Mr. Keating, and we want in.

2

Professor Albus Dumbledore ('Harry Potter' series)

Dumbledore Harry Potter
Everett Collection

Unfortunately, spells and wizardry most likely won’t replace the typical English and U.S. History material in the curriculum. However, we could all use a teacher like Professor Dumbledore. Seeing that he’s the head of Gryffindor, the Headmaster of Hogwarts AND the greatest wizard in the world, why wouldn’t we want to be taught a subject by the person who knows it best?

All eight (!) of the Harry Potter films are available to stream on Amazon Instant Video.

3

John Kimble, 'Kindergarten Cop'

Kindergarten Cop John Kimble
Everett Collection

Even though he’s not actually a teacher, we’re obviously going to include undercover detective John Kimble. Safety would never be an issue since he can protect his students in any given situation. He also doubles as a human jungle gym and is totally tumor-free, so that’s pretty cool too.

Kindergarten Cop is available to purchase on Google Play and Vudu.

4

Ms. Day, 'New Girl'

New Girl Jess Day

When she’s not in her apartment goofing around, Jess Day makes quirk work as an elementary school teacher. After all, wouldn’t we all like to have a teacher who loves what they do? New Girl is available to stream on Netflix.

5

Mr. Schneebly, 'School of Rock'

Mr. Schneebly School of Rock
Everett Collection

Rock star wannabe, Dewey Finn, may not know how to spell his pretend substitute name to his private school students, but he does know how to rock. He taught his students the essentials, like Led Zeppelin and music notes…not “the boring subjects.”

School of Rock is available to purchase on Google Play and Vudu.

6

Mr. Miyagi, 'The Karate Kid'

Mr. Miyagi Karate Kid
Everett Collection

Classrooms with chalkboards and desks? Psh, that’s too mainstream. At least that’s what Mr. Miyagi thinks! Not many teachers can succeed at teaching a life lesson by having their students “wax on” and “wax off.” Let’s not forget that if there’s ever a bully, he’s got your back on teaching you to how to kick ass (at the right times, of course).

The Karate Kid is available to stream on Amazon Instant Video and Netflix.

7

Economics Teacher, 'Ferris Bueller’s Day Off'

Ferris Bueller's Day Off Economics teacher

“Bueller?…Bueller?” We never learned the name of the “Economics Teacher” played by former Nixon speechwriter turned game show host Ben Stein, but then again, he taught us all about “voodoo economics.”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is available to stream on Netflix.

8

Miss Frizzle, 'The Magic School Bus'

Miss Frizzle The Magic School Bus

Field trips everyday? Where can I sign up? The free-spirited and zany pilot of the Magic School Bus may not be the safest driver, but Miss Frizzle takes her students to places you can’t imagine…including the insides of a human body. Now that’s something you don’t do everyday.

The Magic School Bus is available to stream on Netflix.

9

Mr. Feeny, 'Boy Meets World'

Mr. Feeny Boy Meets World

From middle school to college, Mr. Feeny tags along for the ride with Cory, Eric, Topanga, and Shawn equipped with only the best life lessons that we all wish we could have been given while in school.

Not only is she credited with splitting up The Plastics, shooting down the idea of girls dumbing themselves down to get a guy’s attention, and making the mathletes feel cool, she taught the entire school a lesson on anti-bullying, which ended up being pretty successful. You go, Glen Coco!
