Who Is James Corden? And Is He Going To Be Craig Ferguson’s Late Night Replacement?

We already knew that Stephen Colbert will be taking over The Late Show from David Letterman next year, but now The Wrap is reporting that British actor, writer and producer James Corden will be taking over The Late Late Show from Craig Ferguson.

James Corden might be unfamiliar to American audiences, but in the UK, he’s a massive star. He co-wrote and co-created one of the most critically-acclaimed sitcoms of the last decade, beat James Earl Jones out for a Tony and is about to co-star opposite Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp in Into The Woods.

He’s got the skills, but do you think James Corden’s got what it takes to be an American late night host? Check out Decider’s primer on James Corden and let us know!

The History Boys (2006)

James Corden’s big break was starring in The National Theatre’s celebrated production of The History Boys. The play was such a smash that it was adapted into an equally beloved film. Corden was one of the many actors in the original cast who reprised his role onscreen.

Gavin and Stacey

Corden proved that he was more than just an actor when he and friend Ruth Jones co-wrote and co-created the absolutely adorable sitcom, Gavin and Stacey. The comedy follows a romance between Gavin, a nice guy from Essex, and Stacey, a blithe spirit from Wales.

Gavin and Stacey is available to stream on Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Instant Video

Doctor Who, Season 5, Episode 11, “The Lodger” and Season 6, Episode 12, “Closing Time”

Doctor Who is one of the most popular shows in the UK and it’s an honor if you get a plum guest role on the show. Corden has been featured not once, but twice on the show as an everyday guy whose life is turned upside down by the Doctor.

Doctor Who is available to stream on Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Instant Video

The Wrong Mans

James Corden returned to writing and producing comedy with The Wrong Mans. The original Hulu series follows two everyday Joes who get mixed up in a crazy plot after one of them answers the wrong telephone call.

The Wrong Mans is available to stream on Hulu.

Into The Woods

Despite all of his success in the UK (and a Tony win), Corden has yet to crossover with American audiences. That might change this Christmas when he stars as The Baker in Disney’s big screen adaptation of Into The Woods. The guy’s going to head-to-head with Meryl Streep, so maybe taking over The Late Late Show is going to be a cakewalk for him.
