This Week’s Background Binge: ‘The Writer’s Room’

What is a Background Binge, you ask? You know when you’re in the mood to watch something after work other than the local news or reruns of Seinfeld you’ve seen a dozen times? Something you don’t have to be too invested in and allows you to walk in and out of the room while occasionally checking on that Trader Joe’s burrito in the toaster oven? No fear! The Background Binge is here to fit perfectly into your evening routine.

Background bingeing is perfect for audio rather than visual satisfaction — you want to hear the conversation and the jokes, but you don’t necessarily have time to sit and watch. This week, we have the increasingly popular The Writer’s Room, hosted by Jim Rash of NBC’s Community.

The show hosts discussions between writers and stars of the most beloved shows of the last decade, among them Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and Parks and RecreationThe Writer’s Room is perfect for background bingeing because you can be perfectly productive and still listen to some of television’s greatest minds reveal behind-the-scenes info and fun facts about all stages of production and the featured show’s cultural impact. Each episode focuses on a different series and is only about 20 minutes long, so no strict investment required. Think of it as a podcast, only without the long-winded monologue from the host — and with much more famous guests.

Take a load off, pop in that burrito, and play with your dog while you listen to Jim Rash and his guests discuss the gory details of your all-time favorite series.

The Writer’s Room is available to stream on Netflix and Sundance.tv.
