MacKenzie Gore gets another shot at his former team when the Washington Nationals play the Padres in San Diego. It should be a tense atmosphere after the Padres scored four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to win Monday's series opener.

It is a baseball-heavy Tuesday, with the Yankees and Mets squaring off at Citi Field in Gerrit Cole's second outing of the season. If you get a kick out of soccer, there are a couple Copa America matches on the slate.

The WNBA is holding the Commissioner's Cup, with the New York Liberty looking to win it for a second straight season. OK, on to the picks.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS VS. SAN DIEGO PADRES

Gore was selected with the third overall pick in 2017 by the Padres and was billed as a future frontline starter. The left-hander was expected to someday provide tons of productive innings and bushels of strikeouts.

Gore reached the majors in 2022 and struck out 72 in 70 innings while getting acquainted with major league hitters. Then Washington wanted to trade Juan Soto, and the Padres made an early August deal that included Gore, solid shortstop CJ Abrams (three hits, two runs, two steals on Monday), and others being sent to the Nationals. Soto, of course, is no longer with San Diego.

Gore is 6-6 with a 3.49 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 80 innings and has won four of his past six starts, allowing one earned run in each of the victories. This will be his second time pitching at Petco Park as an opponent and his third time facing the Padres. He is 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA.

Oh yeah, the tension. Washington scored three times in the 10th inning Monday before the Padres rallied for a 7-6 win. Jackson Merrill singled in two, and Jurickson Profar later delivered the game-winning two-run single. Profar didn't like Washington walking Luis Arraez intentionally to face him or a pitch being thrown near his face during the at-bat, and he was yelling at the Nationals' dugout during San Diego's wild celebration.

NEW YORK YANKEES at NEW YORK METS

The Subway Series is a more intense matchup now that the Mets have won 13 of their past 17 games. They have scored 10 or more runs four times during their stretch and allowed two or fewer runs seven times during the stretch.

The bullpen situation could be a bit, well, sticky with closer Edwin Diaz being suspended for 10 games due to violating the policy on foreign substances on Sunday night against the Chicago Cubs. Diaz can choose to appeal the suspension. If he does, it will be fun watching the umpires zero in on him when he enters the game.

The Yankees are slumping with six losses in eight games since reaching the 50-win mark on June 14. No need to panic with Aaron Judge (28 homers) and Soto (18 homers) having big seasons, but Giancarlo Stanton (18 homers) was placed on the injured list Sunday and is expected to miss a month with a hamstring injury.

Cole, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, is back from a spring training elbow injury and gave up two runs in four innings against the Baltimore Orioles in his season debut. Cole is 2-2 with a ragged 5.89 ERA in seven career starts against the Mets.

Yankees -1.5 run line, -114 (DraftKings)

MINNESOTA LYNX VS. NEW YORK LIBERTY

New York reached this contest by going 5-0 against other Eastern Conference teams, while Minnesota advanced due to a 4-1 record against Western foes.

Both teams have won nine of their past 10 games, with the Lynx riding a six-game winning streak and the Liberty having won their last three. New York is the "host" team, but the Barclays Center in Brooklyn is unavailable due to NBA draft preparations, so the game is being played in Elmont, N.Y.

These teams played on May 25, and Minnesota rolled to an 84-67 victory. New York scored nine points in the final quarter.

The Lynx plus points seems like a good call.

Lynx +5 spread, -110 (DraftKings)
