It was a huge honour to be recognised at the ceremony at the Science Museum London for our contribution to the fight against antimicrobial resistance. It is an absolute honour to announce that Sysmex Astrego has been awarded the Longitude Prize on Antimicrobial Resistance #AMR for the PA-100 AST System. #UTI are a common affliction, but lack efficient diagnostics, resulting in increased AMR through inaccurate, empiric antibiotic prescriptions. #Sysmex Astrego’s user-friendly PA-100 AST System determines bacterial growth and radically expedites AST (antibiotic susceptibility tests) by having susceptibility results be available directly at the point-of-care in less than an hour. Last Friday and Saturday, our colleagues from Sysmex España organised a workshop about #UTI and #AMR at a local nephrourology meeting in La Rioja, Spain. The workshop focused on antibiotic treatment and resistance to antimicrobials, “a global health problem due to the often-unnecessary use of antibiotics”, as stated by the speakers. They will test the PA-100 #AST System in their health centres, of which they shared that it is “a novel technology that offers fast and relevant information to the clinician to provide a better treatment to patients”. #sysmex #urinalysis

The PA-100 AST System offers the possibility of analysing native urine samples using a point of care tool. This automated analyser allows the detection of bacteriuria within 15 minutes and the performance of antibiotic susceptibility testing within 30 to 45 minutes. This will open the door to supporting for diagnoses that enable targeted antibiotic prescriptions within less than one hour, during the patient’s first visit to the doctor. It is estimated that 150 million urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur yearly on a global basis, making it one of the most frequent bacterial infections worldwide. For everyday infections like UTIs, the possibility of a near-patient testing device provides a unique tool to select antibiotics tailored to each infectious episode. Making this information available to the treating expert and so close to the patient is key in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) as well as helping patients recover faster.
