Our Co-CEO, Max R. Gilgenmann is at Copenhagen Fashion Week! The opening reception has touched on many important current developments and how creativity is a key to overcome the challenges. And it was highlighted how collaboration is needed and that BFW adopting the Sustainability Requirements, in collaboration with Fashion Council Germany and studio MM04 is another great example on how this co-creates positive impact. Anne Pascual from Zalando, one of CPHFW's main partners, emphasized the importance of long-term partnerships, their own strategy to focus on quality, and supporting creative and innovative talents through the heart of their partnership: The Zalando Visionary Awards. Last but certainly not least, were the words of Arizona Muse, highlighting the critical role of soil and agriculture for the future of fashion and regeneration. Everyone shares the same vision that creativity is key to the needed transformation! Hosted by Beneficial Design Institute and 202030 – THE BERLIN FASHION SUMMIT in early July, a forward-thinking discussion on the role and potential of sustainability communication in media was full of thought-provoking ideas! Our Founder & Executive Chairman, Tom Schneider and Vice President of Additional Materials, Dr. Reiner Hengstmann, shared their valuable insights from the angle of next-gen materials manufacturer and innovator. 🌿 About last nights ClimateHack 🌿 Thanks for the invitation to talk and share our – especially cultural and strategic – points of view on #DeepTech for Sustainability in Fashion. Special thanks to Laura Coppen from H&M, Mario Osterwalder from circular.fashion, Denis Frischmann from ClimateHack and our CEO Max R. Gilgenmann (studio MM04). 🌐 We explored the idea that technological innovation requires cultural innovation and focus on the mindset and cultural evolution, to effectively implement the already existing technological solutions. This perspective is critical to driving sustainable change in the fashion industry. 💡 Industry insights: Laura Coppen from H&M shared that their corporate venture capital (CVC) is primarily focused on their two key materials: Cotton and Polyester. 💡 Innovative start-ups: reverse.fashion, a spin-off from circular.fashion, is looking for investors for a fully automated textile sorting machine powered by their AI-driven software. It was great to be part of the discussion and offer both; constructive and critical perspectives. We would like to thank ClimateHack for organizing this event. One of the most inspiring activities we do at the Beneficial Design Institute is our work with Masters and Bachelors students. For the AMD Akademie Mode & Design Sustainability Lab final project, we focused on developing Regenerative Footwear, facilitating a collaborative process between the students, ISA Next-Gen Materials and Trippen. The project, titled “RE_STORY_ING FASHION” plays with Robin Wall Kimmer’s concept of pairing environmental restoration with new narratives of environmentalism. We ask the critical question, how might we design for a fashion future that tells a different, positive narrative? How might a shoe be a container for such a narrative? The students use 100% biobased and plastic-free material HyphaLite from ISA Next-Gen Materials to develop a physical product, with the help of the team at Trippen, who guided our cohort with footwear design workshops and a final assembly day at their factory. Students paired the shoe design with a communication strategy, with the aim to spread awareness about fashion that regenerates communities as well as the planet, creating a holistic positive impact. We are so proud of the brilliant work of the participants! 🎉 The time has finally come: we're launching our second campaign "Under Our Skin: microplastics in fashion" today at the sustainable fashion conference 202030 – THE BERLIN FASHION SUMMIT 🎉🎉 Over the last few days, you've been guessing which topic we'll address next. Well, it's synthetic microfibers – and polyester specifically. Polyester makes up a considerable proportion of the microplastics that end up in the ocean. It can cause inflammatory reactions in living organisms. The concentration of microfibers in the environment varies greatly. However, it is steadily increasing. 🌊 International political agreements and a change to our economic system (so that it puts the planet before profit) are what's needed. We want industry to take proactive political action to restore the health of the planet. We've taken your opinions on board and will address decision-makers in politics and business in two petitions. In the first petition, we call on adidas to rethink and act.💡 To achieve a reduction of microplastics in fashion, we're using the power of conceptual art. In a series of portraits, we‘ll address five central themes related to the production of polyester: Oil Extraction, Overconsumption, Microfibers, Fashion Colonialism, and Healing. 📸 We will realize the photo series in collaboration with Toni Meyer, Vibha Galhotra, Kobina Nyarko, and other conceptual artists in Spring 2025.
