Tesla Berlin

What To Expect
Join Vehicle Engineering in Berlin to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy where you will help design and launch the next generation of cutting-edge automotive products for Tesla. Our world-class engineering teams operate with a non-conventional automotive product development philosophy of high interdisciplinary collaboration, flat organizational structure, and technical contribution at all levels. You will be expected to challenge and be challenged, to create, and to innovate. You must want to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial company. We are building real products. This must excite you. You’ll work alongside accomplished, world-renowned engineers on perhaps the most exciting automotive programs in existence today.

Mechanical Design Engineer - Interior Engineering

The Interior Engineering team leads development and launch of nearly all customer-facing areas inside our vehicles including Instrument Panel, Door Trim, Console, Overhead Trims, Hard Trims, and Soft Trims for both cabin and cargo/trunk areas. Our team’s goal is to innovate and engineer a premium Interior System for our vehicles while optimizing our critical attributes like cost, mass, manufacturability, etc. This is a pivotal role to act as liaison between US and Berlin engineering teams to tackle challenging problems together. As part of a global company, you will tackle engineering challenges together with US and CN Interiors teams alongside other cross-functional teams to continuously innovate and launch new products for Europe and other growing markets.

What You'll Do

  • Design development, validation and manufacturing launch of components of one or more of Interiors commodities (dependent on phase of ongoing program(s)) balancing inputs and attributes including, but not limited to, Design Studio styling, ergonomics, serviceability, integration packaging with cost, mass, craftsmanship, NVH, automation, etc. This iterative process includes close collaboration with Studio, Purchasing and Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and broader engineering teams through CAD development, CAE loops, RFQ stages, sourcing, part production, launch and build root-causing
  • Utilize and/or create DFSS, DFMEA, DVP&R concepts and processes to produce robust vehicle component designs alongside hands-on prototyping and trials to learn and fail fast. Consider both analytical and physical assessments including dimensional tolerance stack-ups in design as well as to create detailed GD&T drawings and corresponding checking fixtures. Work closely with Validation and Test & Reliability groups.Collaborate efficiently with key external suppliers and to support overall vehicle development milestones, prototype/production build events, and a successful start of production. Work in partnership with suppliers through part design (when applicable), root-cause troubleshooting, manufacturing trials, part and system level validation, etc. to actively understand and contribute to design solutions.
  • Analyze Field Reliability data of current programs to improve Interior Reliability through design/process/manufacturing changes. Release design changes through Tesla’s 3DExperience system to properly document and track part updates, MBOM changes, and PO releases to downstream teams and suppliers

  • What You'll Bring

  • Education background in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of experience in automotive interior component and subsystem engineering, demonstrating technical aptitude from concept through release and launch for production
  • First principles, physics-based thinker, and problem solver attitude with mental agility to handle problems of varied scope and complexity, and tight timing constraints. Demonstrate engineering technical aptitude, excellent communication, and creativity. Proficient in English
  • In-depth technical understanding of common automotive and new, latest mass manufacturing technologies and the relationship to design feasibility for a variety of processes including injection molding, thermoforming, and lamination to achieve world-class craftsmanship/ performance targets.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling utilizing CATIA V5 or V6 is essential within an automotive product development environment. Experience with Change Control and Part Release within 3DExperience platform is a bonus.
  • Strong working knowledge of DFM and DFA, including familiarity with GD&T and dimensional controls
