The International Film Festival Berlin (IFB) is the city's most important cultural event, one of the most prestigious occasions in the international film industry, and simultaneously one of the world's largest audience film festivals.

Director of Communication and Brand (m/f/d)

The full-time position is limited until 31st March 2029.

The Director of Communications and Brand is a key role within the Berlinale executive team. They join the Festival at a very exciting time: in the 75th year as the Berlinale celebrates a legacy rich with quality and integrity, and rooted in the idea that art and cinema can bring humanity together and foster understanding.

Modernising the brand around the twin pillars of being one of the world’s most prestigious film events while also pursuing high standards of inclusivity, the Director of Communications and Brand will support the team to ensure consistent tone of voice across all channels as we set and aim to hit ambitious income targets while also achieving cultural objectives.

Day to day, the Director of Communications and Brand offers strategic leadership to established Press, Communications & Marketing and Sponsorship teams across the whole of the Festival including Berlinale Pro, supporting and guiding the refinement of our public facing brand identity, and developing our address to audiences and partners.

As a member of the executive team, this position will help develop the wider strategic goals of the Berlinale, energise the staff around these plans and drive the organisation towards cost effective, sustainable and progressive ways of delivering the Festival.


Your responsibilities and tasks.

  • Support mature teams to work to a shared vision with their extensive B2B and B2C marketing, communications and commercial experience
  • Lead a review of all channels of communication and build a data-led approach to measuring impact
  • Work with teams on the brand strategy to enhance the brand's image, ensure consistency across all channels, and align marketing efforts with the overall business goals
  • Oversee the development of our crisis communication strategy and management of brand reputation
  • Be an ambassador for the Berlinale with commercial and cultural partners and brands
  • Support the sponsorship team in developing an ambitious growth strategy for brand partnership
  • Work with the Festival Director, the Director of Finance and Business Development and Director of Berlinale Pro to devise other new income strategies
  • Create an environment in which all teams within this executive branch work collaboratively and efficiently, and with colleagues across the Berlinale
  • Maintain an awareness of cultural fit and socio-political sensitivities when vetting partners
  • Oversee departmental budgets to ensure cost effectiveness


Requirements, knowledge and skills.

  • Extensive senior experience in B2B and B2C brand management
  • Excellent leadership skills and the proven ability to develop a strategic plan and energise staff around delivery
  • Proven ability to help an organisation hit ambitious partnership income targets
  • Experience in communication with stakeholders and shareholders in a representative role
  • Genuine passion for art and culture, a strong interest in cinema and in the role festivals can play in cultural conversation
  • Proven commitment to data and evidence based communications
  • Experience in developing highly effective digital communications tools
  • Proven commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • C2 level in German and English skills, other languages beneficial
