RWE SECURES HVDC SYSTEMS FOR FUTURE OFFSHORE WIND FARMS Offshore wind developer RWE has signed long-term framework agreements with Hitachi Energy and Aibel to secure three high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems for its upcoming offshore wind projects. The agreements allow RWE to reserve engineering and manufacturing capacity years in advance for the vital HVDC systems needed to transmit electricity from its offshore wind farms to the onshore grid. Hitachi will supply the converter systems, while Aibel will construct the offshore platform hosting the HVDC technology. RWE CEO Sven Utermöhlen highlighted the importance of securing this transmission infrastructure early given supply chain challenges. "This type of agreement is exactly what we need to succeed in driving the expansion of offshore wind globally." The HVDC systems are designated for RWE's offshore wind pipeline projects set to connect to the grid in the early 2030s. RWE have gone from a niche yesterday to a key pillar of today's and tomorrow’s energy landscape as per Sven Utermöhlen CEO of RWE More than 20 years ago, RWE began the journey with offshore wind. Back then with just two installed 2-MW turbines at #Blyth. Sven said it reveals the extraordinary evolution RWE have made since then. And one thing that has definitely changed in that time is capacity. RWE Sofia project in the #UK, for example, which is now under construction, will eventually boost a capacity of 1,400 MW. Driving this growing capacity is the growing size of our wind farms and of the wind turbines themselves. Taking Sofia as an example again: Here we will have 108-metre-long rotor blades and a rotor diameter of 222 metres, whereas our Scroby Sand’s turbine blades are 40 metres long. The larger the rotor blades the greater the output. The power output is a quadratic function of the blade length, meaning if you double the length of the blades, you in fact quadruple the output. That helps us harvest the wind from offshore. Hamburg-based clean energy asset manager Luxcara signed a preferred turbine supplier agreement with China’s Mingyang Smart Energy for the offshore wind farm Waterkant Ingenieure GmbH. The reservation agreement is for 16 of the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbines with up to 18.5 megawatts (MW) of capacity each for installation in 2028. The gigantic turbines have a rotor diameter of 260 meters (853 feet). Once it comes online, Waterkant Ingenieure GmbH will generate clean electricity for around 400,000 households. Luxcara launched an international tender in late 2023, and it stated in its selection announcement that the decision for Mingyang Smart Energy ’s turbines was based on “an extensive due diligence exercise, covering the supply chain, ESG compliance aligned with the EU taxonomy, and cybersecurity supported by independent experts from renowned international advisers.�� The European wind power industry’s lobbying group WindEurope called for fair competition in the face of cheaper Chinese turbines, saying, “Germany and the European Union must consider whether they see wind energy as a strategic sector before it is too late.” Similar to Europe’s EV industry, there’s concern about unfair trade practices in the solar and wind sectors because Chinese-made wind turbines and solar panels cost less than European-made products. There are currently 1,280 wind farms in America. Unfortunately, at least 80% are running significantly below design. However, 1% are exceptional. Among the 1% is the RWE Grand View wind farm. Grand View Wind Farm is located in Texas and is tied to the grid at 345 kV. It is connected to the Oncor electric transmission line. The farm is rated at 211.2 MW and has 118 GE turbines 1.7. Grand View Wind Farm is one of the rare sites with a net capacity factor above 50%. In 2016, they reached 50.18%, and in 2018, 51.02%. In 2021, the capacity factor was 45.88%. Even the top offshore wind farms do not reach 50%; the USA's average capacity factor is 35%. What is a net capacity factor? It is also called utilization ratio. (Yearly MWh output) / (Yearly Nameplate rated MWh) There are many critical factors in analyzing a wind farm. The low-hanging fruits are: 1- Does the power system output match the intended design output within a reasonable confidence interval? 2- Are the correct power system data appropriately analyzed to provide the right directions for operations to run efficiently? I have analyzed all the wind farms regarding statements 1 and 2. Unfortunately, at least 80% are significantly flawed. It can be fixed with no significant costs. Respect for RWE and Grand View Wind Farm. 50% is a milestone only reached by fewer than 12 Wind Farms in America. A ranking of all wind farms is coming. The partnership submitted the bid for Community Offshore Wind on Wednesday. If it goes through in the upcoming solicitation round and is built according to specifications, it would be able to generate 1.3GW of electricity – enough to power 500,000 homes. The project, set to begin construction in 2027 or 2028, will be located 60 km off Barnegat Light on Long Beach and is set to become operational by 2031. It is still unknown what are the differences between this and the rejected bid. Community Offshore Wind, along with two more projects, was not awarded due to GE Vernova deciding to pivot away from the initially proposed 18MW turbine platform to a 15.5/16.5MW turbine, which caused material changes to three proposed projects. As the developers and GE Vernova could not reach an agreement which would involve the smaller turbines, the solicitation round was concluded without final awards. The new bid for the RWE-National Grid project is the final bid for the solicitation round along with Attentive Energy which is proposing a project along its preliminarily approved wind farm off Seaside Heights. The new project would power 650,000 homes and would be done with TotalEnergies, Corio Generation, and Rise Light & Power as partners.

Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) POSITION PAPER "A GLOBAL WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE ON INTEGRATING NON-PRICE CRITERIA INTO AUCTION FRAMEWORKS" is attached. KEY POINTS: Dynamic cost environments, rising inflation and cost of capital, and a lack of coherent industrial strategies pose challenges to wind energy development and supply chain stability today, requiring flexible tender design and collaboration between government and industry. Wind energy auctions should avoid fostering a ‘race to the bottom’ by focusing procurement criteria on attaining wind generation for the lowest possible cost, as this jeopardises long-term investment con­ditions for the continued deployment of wind energy and investment in supply chains. Designing robust pre-qualification criteria for ten­ders and broader supply chain plans for the wind sector can support governments in responding to changing market conditions while maximising ener­gy transition benefits. Some governments are further integrating NPC into renewable energy procurement schemes, exploring social, economic, and environmental criteria beyond price in auctions to recognise and maximise the val­ue obtained from renewable energy. NPC should be implemented in a consultative process between governments and industry, to adequately adapt auc­tion design to reflect government ambitions, sector capabilities, the wider cost environment and evolv­ing market conditions. NPC can be broadly categorised under sustainabil­ity, system integration, and social impact factors. It would be more effective to apply NPC to offshore wind tenders rather than onshore wind tenders, due to the larger scale and longer planning timelines for offshore wind projects. In offshore wind tender pro­cesses, earlier application of NPC is preferred, e.g. at the seabed leasing stage for markets with a two-stage auction process. While some countries have adopted local content requirements (LCRs) as a tool to encourage sup­ply chain development, the ambition to simulate domestic industrial development should be ap­proached separately to NPC. Overly prescriptive LCRs and implementing supply chain requirements within NPC may result in higher LCOE, hinder for­ward-planning for supply chain actors, and distort markets by restricting supply chain investment to a small number of actors with winning bids. Broader and more holisitic planning for supply chains and industrial development, developed in collabora­tion with industry and focused on development, construction, and long-term operations and main­tenance (O&M) activities, is more effective in fos­tering a sustainable and thriving wind industry.

German energy major RWE AG (ETR:RWE) on Monday announced that it has taken the investment decision for the Nordseecluster offshore wind projects, firming up its plan to install up to 1.6 GW off the coast of Germany. “Our portfolio already includes six offshore wind farms off Germany’s coastlines. The Nordseecluster will add two more. […] With a total capacity of 1.6 gigawatts, these wind farms will generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of green electricity per year. This will contribute in particular to the decarbonisation of industry in our home market,” said Sven Utermoehlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind. RWE will build Nordseecluster in two phases. The Nordseecluster A phase will have 44 wind turbines and a total capacity of 660 MW. Offshore construction of the A section is scheduled to commence in 2025, while the connection of the turbines to the grid is expected to take place by the beginning of 2027. The Nordseecluster B, featuring 60 turbines and 900 MW of capacity, is set to start commercial operation from the beginning of 2029. The wind farm cluster will be located some 50 km (31.1 miles) north of the island of Juist in the German waters of the North Sea. Denmark's Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) was selected as the preferred wind turbine supplier last year. Its order to supply 104 units of its V236 15-MW machines hinged on the final investment decision. Among the suppliers is Atlantique Offshore Energy, the marine energy business unit of France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique, which is to supply two electrical offshore substations. Greece’s Hellenic Cables will manufacture the cables, while China’s Dajin Offshore will manufacture and deliver the monopile foundations, which Dutch marine contractor Van Oord will install at the offshore site. Norway’s Havfram Wind will transport and install the turbines using its installation vessels Norse Wind and Norse Energi. Until about mid last year, Canadian power producer Northland Power Inc (TSE:NPI) held a 49% stake in the Nordseecluster project. As host, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) convened discussions to highlight the complexities of energy planning & policymaking amidst environmental & economic constraints. ✅ This year’s conference featured three plenary sessions with three key themes respectively, and over 140 presentations in parallel sessions. ➡ The long awaited Draft law to accelerate approval procedures for #geothermalplants, #heatpumps and #heatstorage-systems and to amend further legal framework conditions for the climate-neutral expansion of the heat supply ("GeoWG"), has been published now in Germany. We will review it in detail and keep you posted. The aim of the draft GeoWG law is to remove legal obstacles to the development of #geothermal energy and the expansion of heat pumps and heat storage facilities. The amendments relate to the various permits that are required for the construction of plants. This concerns both deep geothermal energy (from 400 metres underground) and near-surface geothermal energy (up to 400 metres). The draft bill is an article law and provides for amendments to mining law (#Bundesberggesetz), water law (#Wasserhaushaltsgesetz) and nature conservation law (#Bundesnaturschutzgesetz) in addition to general rules (incl. regulation on overriding public interest, cancellation of suspensive effect, shortening of legal channels, etc.). The draft law is also intended to implement the deadlines of the amended Renewable Energy Directive (#REDIII). This is a very good day for #Geothermalplants and the #energytransition in Germany! It is important to accelerate the development of the energy potential of geothermal energy and the expansion of heat pumps.
