https://lnkd.in/eYa8SAPg On our Deloitte leadership meeting in Hamburg (Thanks Sebastian Pfeifle for hosting us) we have been discussing the future of our field and how to position ourselves. Over drinks we found ourselves vividly arguing about this article. Many points mentioned we can all agree on - AI- and RPA-Capabilities are often still not understood - Yet, we can all agree on the potential of imbedding AI and RPA solution in our daily routines - Use Cases are the most common way to carve out that potential and free budgets by the means of business cases That being said, it might be time to take discussion to next level as - Application of GenAI-Technologies seem so broad and deeply embedded in operations that the evade the standard business case logic. ‘Mobile Computing’ was best analogy we came up with  - Taking of being ‘deeply embedded in operations’ we talk about the support of daily (human) routines. Say, draft an email, a workshop agenda etc. We are certainly going to see a new level of cyber-physical systems emerging that rather describe an ecosystem than a single case - Putting AI and RPA Social challenges requires intend. Digital upskilling has been in the focus of research and debate for a while now. The exponential development of machine learning and large data analysis added another turn to the challenge. In a recent discussion with Prof. Dr. Roland Koch from Frankfurt School of Finance and Management it was clear that business and even countries need to readdress their digital strategies and regulatory infrastructure to be able to reap the benefits of AI in this ever evolving business environment.

OECD report on AI in Germany   In June 2024, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) published a report on the status of the development and use of AI in Germany. The study analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the AI ecosystem. In its report, the OECD generally emphasizes Germany's good starting position. Potential for optimization is seen in access to data. It is particularly positive about the research landscape and the attraction it exerts on specialists and talent. According to the OECD, computing capacities in research are particularly good. Germany is also on the right track in terms of transfer to the economy and has set the right priorities. It attests to a good political strategy. The human-centered approach chosen in Germany sets global standards for the responsible use of AI. The report is based on quantitative and qualitative data as well as findings from the OECD AI Policy Observatory and the OECD Program on AI in Work, Innovation, Productivity and Skills (AI-WIPS) - an OECD research program funded by the German government - and is based on the results of interviews with a wide range of stakeholders in Germany. More power for AI: quantum computers as a solution? AI is constantly hungry for more computing power. Quantum computing could be a solution to this dilemma. Compared to conventional computers, they can potentially perform far more complex tasks faster and more cost-effectively. At the same time, they would be an energy-saving alternative now that data centers are consuming more power than ever before due to GenAI. According to AI research institute Epoch AI, the computing capacity needed to train large language models and the platforms on which GenAI and AI run is doubling every nine months. The International Energy Agency informs that the global power demand of data centers will more than double between 2022 and 2026. Quantum computers increase the performance of AI. AI and quantum computers can speed up the development of drugs and personalized pharmaceuticals by years. In early 2024, for example, various research institutions announced that they were using a generative AI model on quantum hardware for the first time that outperforms state-of-the-art classical models in generating viable candidates for cancer drugs. But: Although quantum computers are suitable for solving complex problems, they are "not a big data solution". They could be useful for solving specific problems, but are usually still at a very early stage of development. They are only suitable for small-scale experiments and troubleshooting. More efficient code for greater sustainability The Federal Environment Agency has developed a catalog of criteria for software. It enables companies, authorities and researchers to assess software on the basis of measurable criteria and obvious characteristics. Another research objective was to compare the environmental impact of software products with similar functionality. The agency developed so-called standard usage scenarios, a measurement method and supporting tools. With their help, it is possible for the first time to measure the proportion of energy and hardware resources used by software products. We have used case studies to test whether the methodology and tools are robust and meaningful. Findings are: Software products of the same type that are used for the same functions have very different energy requirements and place different demands on the hardware. For example, the energy requirements of two word processing programs differ significantly. Word processing program A consumed almost four times as much energy on the same hardware to process the same standard usage scenario as the comparable word processing program B. The more efficient word processing program B uses less hardware than word processing program A. This was really so far the best offline meetups experience for me! Very engaging & passionate members, insightful industrial observations and perfect mix of professional and personal life discussions. What I've noticed is that the women in AI's community are dedicated to the development of the industry and personal career growth while always keeping an eye on what AI can do for society as a whole. In my opinion, this is a much more sustainable strategic approach. This is why AI, especially generative AI, a disruptive technology, needs more women on board. To capture its value and secure confidence in its outcomes, we need to be faster.   Building enterprise-wide AI governance is a demanding task, which may require considerable amount of time and energy. On one hand with the current pace of AI proliferation into organizations` ecosystems and regulatory push on another, the top-down approach alone may be not sufficient to achieve ``Responsible and Compliant AI`` within the acceptable time horizon.   At EY we recognize the urgency of this task. That is why we have developed our Responsible AI Framework applied on 2 levels – overall Enterprise and AI solution. At Enterprise level Responsible AI Governance and Risk Management enablement establish foundation for purposeful AI activities, aligned with regulatory requirements and organization`s vision and strategy. Simultaneously, our solution-level approach offers clients a tailored AI Risk Assessment as a managed service, based on specifically developed framework, methodology and tools to run such assessments with speed and agility.
