SIL2 Safety Application directly on a Linux System As a part of a highly innovative project together with Elektrobit Automotive GmbH (https://lnkd.in/g5zPMY5h) emlix task was to developed a Safety Monitor for the Linux Kernel. This supervisory element together with the EB Hypervisor allows for the first time to run a SIL 2 safety application directly on a Linux system. This new approach received a positive and extensive assessment by the TÜV Nord in early March 2024. It is applicable not only for the ISO 26262 (ASIL B, SEooC) but also the IEC 61508 (SIL2). After three years of cooperative development Linux for Safety Applications finally bridges the gap between safety and open source technology. This results in economic and efficiency gains for safety-critical projects in various industries like industrial automation and medical technology. By integrating a non-SIL and a SIL application on a single SOC it has become possible to implement low latency communication between the applications as well as to use the inherent performance of a Linux system. This makes new architectures and application contexts feasible especially for the SIL domain. Additional synergies result from the unification of the runtime environment: Development and manintenance become a lot more efficient since the same competence is needed to develop and maintain SIL and non-SIL applications. SW Issues at VW Summary Volkswagen Group's software division, Cariad, is facing significant delays, pushing the launch of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) from 2024 to an uncertain date after 2026. Audi, initially set to launch an SSP-based model in 2026, now expects delays until 2027 or 2028 and has considered purchasing a platform from a Chinese automaker. The Volkswagen brand is also affected, with next-generation models like the electric Golf and ID.4 pushed back to 2029. Delays have also impacted the launch of the large electric Volkswagen SUV T-Sport, now moved from 2028 to 2031. (Link to article: https://lnkd.in/drju5Cd8) My take: 1. Creating a SW platform for multiple models always results in a overly bloated "superset" of a platform that ends up being a beast of its own. This is a very dangerous direction especially when the effects of it will be felt across multiple OEM brands, countries and years to come. 2. The only way these kind of initiatives end up working is to start simple and small. The platform has to become the thinnest minimum viable piece of SW that is really robust and smart. And building from there. 3. Moving all the SW expertise outside of the OEM is also a bad move. SW abstraction layers, no matter how clean they can be split on a diagram, will have a lot of dependencies to each other. And the only way to figure all that out, especially when it is the first iteration is to keep the right engineers together and focused on a common goal. Starting a new SW company does not necessarily make that easier.

Elektrek reports: "Tesla releases update to remove steering wheel nag, shuts down sunglasses loophole," with improved camera-based #driver #monitoring. We need to call this update for what it is. Tesla's improvements to its #DMS amount to no more than polishing a turd. Elektrek continues: "This enhancement is available on vehicles equipped with a #cabincamera and only when the cabin camera has clear and continuous visibility of the driver’s eyes (e.g. the camera is not occluded, there is sufficient cabin illumination, and the driver is looking forward at the road ahead and not wearing sunglasses, a hat with a low brim, or other objects covering the eyes). A DMS needs to work at all times and under all lighting conditions to effectively perform the supervisory role for #FSD and #Autopilot. To not work in low light, or simply if the driver is wearing sunglasses, means it works unless it doesn't. That amounts to a hardware defect which cannot be resolved with changes to the software. This is the game Tesla is currently playing with #NHTSA. Coming regulatory changes mean Tesla is out of time for its woeful DMS. Tesla DMS came last in a recent #IIHS #automation #safeguards ranking (Ford Motor Company's DMS was ranked first) but coming harmonization of regulatory requirements across the U.S., Europe, and China through the 5-star #NCAP test will force Tesla's hand regarding properly functioning DMS in the near term. At a minimum, Tesla needs to implement DMS with 940nm optical path, add “Owl & Lizard” movement detection, work properly with sunglasses, and provide measures of #distraction and #drowsiness. Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks is set to announce its 2026 DMS test protocols later this year and could add metrics for #cognitivedistraction and #impaired driving. Ironically it is Tesla FSD/Autopilot crashes that provide regulators with the data of what functions a DMS performing a supervisory role for partial automation most need to fulfil. NHTSA issued an #ANPRM for impaired driving in November. It is likely to follow that up with clear rulemaking for minimum DMS performance requirements in the next 12 months. The industry should not expect those requirement to be lame. FMVSS 127 for AEB was a major #safety advance. #Automakers should prepare now for the same step-change for DMS in the U.S. too. The latest edition of Semicast's report "#ADAS & #Automotive Vision-based Driver Monitoring Systems" is published. Significant segmentation of the DMS/OMS market is provided. This is summarized as follows:   - by movement detection into "Owl-only" and "Owl & Lizard" detection - by feature set - by processor type - by CMOS image sensor location - by CMOS image sensor resolution - by driver and occupant monitoring - by front-seat and whole-cabin monitoring   Message me for a copy of the sales brochure for the study. The harmonic balance vector signal model chosen gives a space/time/frequency approximation of the response. 👉 Choosing model parameters Geometry, contacts in bolted joints and laminated stacks, non-linear viscoelastic bushings have here a notable impact. 👉 Building a reduced parametric model This provides a 2 to 3 orders of magnitude speedup that is necessary for any practical application. 👉 Building a Hybrid FEM/test twin model Test and FEM are combined using an expansion-based state/parameter estimation process. 📖 [1] https://lnkd.in/eyuRxqhE
