Congratulations, Benedikt Rilling from Nürtingen-Geislingen University (HfWU) on the publication of the paper "Synthetic natural gas in the private heating sector in Germany: match or mismatch between production costs and consumer willingness to pay?" in the journal Energy Sustainability and Society. Drop-in renewable gases such as #biomethane and synthetic natural gas (#SNG) from Power to Gas (#PtG) technologies cause considerably fewer carbon dioxide emissions than natural gas and can be used in natural gas boilers, the dominant heating system in many European countries, thus they can be a bridge towards a #decarbonized #heating system using the existing infrastructure. After the fierce debate on #energycrops ('fuel vs. food', 'Vermaisung') in the last 10-15 years, we were surprised to find in our choice experiment with more than 500 #consumers in #Germany that consumers clearly favor #biomethane over #SNG. The results of our study also revealed that #consumer willingness to pay (#WTP) is (as expected) not high enough to cover the cost of a 100% #SNG product, but that products with a share of 5% or even 10% would be economically feasible in the market given consumer WTP. We see already first products in the market, e.g. proWindgas by #greenplanetenergy that contain small shares of #SNG from #windpower. You can read the article for free: https://lnkd.in/dCh67iiE The study was part of our project (BGA-PtG)2 and we would like to thank the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Germany for the funding [Grant Number 03EI5401C, 2019]. #biogas #biomethane #renewablegas #renewableenergy #greengas #consumer #market Nürtingen-Geislingen University (HfWU) Institutszentrum für Angewandte Forschung Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action

Great news from Kaiserslautern! 📣 Together with Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), we have brought the first Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) to Kaiserslautern to support young scientists in their doctoral studies in topics that combine mathematics and engineering – »MIMO – Mathematics of Interdisciplinary Multiobjective Optimization«. And best of all: thanks to generous funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), we are able to offer 20 new doctoral positions! 🥳 The topics offered to doctoral students are diverse and exciting at the same time: from the systematic planning of transport processes 🚚 to the optimization of radiotherapy for cancer ⚕️. But other topics from areas such as process engineering, thermodynamics and the construction of high-performance chips are also covered. You may be wondering what the advantages of a Research Training Group are. A central component is the supervision and support provided by training camps. But the opportunity to conduct research at RPTU's »Felix Klein Center for Mathematics« and to network with each other is also an advantage! 💬 🌐 If you want to find out more now, take a look at our new press release: https://lnkd.in/e9bec99m

This paper provides important insights for the universities in Berlin, i.e. Technische Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin & Freie Universität Berlin and the Berlin University Alliance, because "in the case of Berlin, having a high number of Excellence Clusters increased the regions’ share of innovative firms by approximately 10.5 to 12.3 percent, accounting for a total of 352 to 412 innovative firms." As Chair of Innovation Economics Technische Universität Berlin I am proud that I kicked-off the Berlin Innovation Panel in 2011 by assigning ZEW – Leibniz-Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung #Berlin focused survey making possible to estimate this representative numbers, which is not feasible for alternative labor market regions in Germany. This insight should help to push the next application of the Berlin University Alliance. https://lnkd.in/ei3BRi3j

There is a shift in German politics 🙌 . For the second time, the chancellery holds a conference where economists and government officials interact. Wolfgang Schmidt stresses that for the first time in recent history, Germany has a three-party coalition government, which does not make governing easy (but at least we get a lot of discussions along the way). A couple of take-aways from the conference: On labour markets. We all know what should be done (retire later if desired, increase female participation) but the German federal & welfare set-up is so complex that incremental change is doomed. On industrial policy: Here it is much less known what is happening and what should be done. Does the state know better? Should Europe emulate the US IRA? Is the German Mittelstand actually quite good at managing change? On AI: Europe has missed the boat on developing that technology (e.g., much fewer supercomputers) but maybe that is ok, we only need to use it well (Europe is not a leader in chip production either). On de-risking the economy: More questions than answers... Which markets, what products, what can be bought elsewhere and what needs to be produced at home, is there a need to regulate (and possibly to retaliate)? Isabel Schnabel with a keynote on technological change. Europe led the US until 1995, lagging since then. Main cause: slow to adapt and manage IT technology, but also fragmented markets etc. As usual, with great evidence: https://lnkd.in/eBvEB-Ki

What is the state of #Prosumers in Germany? Happy to have contributed to LichtBlick SE's new Prosumer Report with my consultancy & software firm tournesol energy ⚡ My favorite result is that on the value of #Flexibility: we estimate that prosumers can currently save 280 €/a with a smart tariff and an optimized operation of home storage, heat pump, and EV charging (no V2G). The report also highlights the bottleneck of realizing flexibility products: #SmartMeters in Germany are still scarce (about 75,000 in 2023) and costly (if you don't want to wait for regulated offers). Many more interesting data and modeling results in the report (in German): https://lnkd.in/egsiaxjx More on tournesol energy: https://lnkd.in/epMwTXf5 Thanks for the great collaboration to Anja Fricke, Ata Mohajer, Ralph Kampwirth, and Bettina H.!

Accelerating the bioeconomy in the FrankfurtRhineMain metropolitan region Thomas Bayer, Provadis School of International Management and Technology, Frankfurt am Main, DE 13.6.2024, 11:30 - 12:00, ACHEMA, Alliance - 4.C Abstract The prosperity and quality of life of the 5.8 million people living in the FrankfurtRhine-Main metropolitan area are based, among other things, on an excellent public infrastructure and a private sector that is successful in global competition. Both have always successfully adapted to changing conditions. However, they are facing fundamental challenges now and in the coming years to come, because climate protection requires a move away from fossil fuels and raw materials. Particularly affected are the production of useful energy, mobility and the chemical industry, which is important in the metropolitan region. As large parts of the chemical industry are based on carbon-containing raw materials, biogenic carbon sources offer alternatives; however, they only account for a small proportion today. For the switch to renewable energies and bio-based chemical production, sustainable energy provision and recycling of carbon, are necessary. In view of the increasing industrial demand for biogenic alternatives, increasing conflicts of utilisation are foreseeable at regional, national and global level. In the metropolitan region, agricultural and forestry raw materials today primarily serve the markets for food and animal feed, pulp and paper, furniture and building materials. In the future, demand for bioenergy and bio-based chemicals is expected to rise sharply, which cannot nearly be met by domestic agriculture and forestry due to limited land and the already strained ecosystem boundaries. For this reason, biogenic residues and waste materials must also be utilised as industrial carbon sources. Agricultural and forestry residues, urban green waste, residues from the food, paper, chemical and bioenergy industries including carbon dioxide, sewage sludge and municipal waste have fundamental potential in the metropolitan region. The Bioeconomy Innovation Space in the Metropolitan Area (BioBall) taps into this potential by bringing together stakeholders from business, research and public administration to identify the utilisation potential of residual and waste materials in the metropolitan region and carry out corresponding technical/scientific research and development projects. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the BioBall innovation area to develop the knowledge for a sustainable economy, i.e. an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable circular bioeconomy. However, in addition to expertise, the necessary structural change requires changes in the use of resources and energy, adjustments to the infrastructure, the further development of the legal framework and an implementation plan. New Paper (open access): What do algorithms explain? The issue of the goals and capabilities of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) - Es hat zwar ewig gedauert, aber nun ist es endlich erschienen. "We show that current algorithms can only answer user questions that can be traced back to the question: “How can one represent an ML model as a simple function that uses interpreted attributes?”. Answering this core question can be trivial, difficult or even impossible, depending on the application. The result of the paper is the identification of two key challenges for XAI research: the approximation and the translation of ML models. https://rdcu.be/dKMXw #ai #ki #explainableai

Electronic Markets - The International Journal on Networked Business
We have published new research: "What we already know about corporate digital responsibility in IS research: A review and conceptualization of potential CDR activities" by Dr. K. Valerie Carl & Oliver Hinz, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt https://lnkd.in/gdYd37e6 Abstract Advances in new technologies affect private and professional lives alike, posing new opportunities and threats for companies, consumers, and society. In this context, the concept of corporate digital responsibility (CDR) gains traction enabling technologies benefitting humanity while exceeding mere technology advancements. Yet, theory and practice still lack a systematic in-depth understanding of the concept’s scope up to concrete activities. The aim of this paper is to enable a more concrete and deeper understanding of the concept scope by drawing on available knowledge in the thematically related discipline of information systems (IS) in general and electronic markets in particular. The study employs an extended systematic literature review to aggregate prior knowledge in this research domain relatable to the concept of CDR and to develop an in-depth classification of potential CDR activities inductively according to ten dimensions, corresponding sub-dimensions, and respective fields of action. This contributes to the overarching goal to develop the conceptualization of CDR and to anchor the concept in the context of electronic markets, thereby fostering human and social value creation. #InformationSystems #CorporateDigitalResponsibility #CDR #Conceptualization #literatureReview #GroundedTheory #ElectronicMarkets
