Statista and Newsweek are proud to introduce the Global Hospital Rating: a comprehensive hospital benchmarking system, created to offer an overview of a hospital’s strengths across five quality dimensions. The quality dimensions are provision and timeliness of care, patient experience and safety, IT and healthcare technology, as well as employer attractiveness. The rating process is based on a comprehensive survey that participating hospitals submit directly to Statista. The submitted data undergoes a thorough evaluation and validation by the Statista Team. After the evaluation is completed, hospitals meeting the criteria are awarded a rating ranging from 1 to 5 stars. Currently, over 40 hospitals across 20 countries have been rated or are in the process of being rated. All participating hospitals are featured on both the Statista R website and Newsweek.com. In 2021, the combined revenues of the four biggest U.S. tech companies - Google, Amazon, Meta and Apple – shot past the trillion-dollar mark. As this week’s racing lines based on company data show, the group generated revenues of $1.2 trillion in the corresponding period. By 2023, revenues rose further to around $1.4 trillion. Compared to the $56 billion those four companies generated in 2007, total revenues increased by 2,400 percent in the past 16 years. Amazon, which is one of the most influential global entities that has redefined e-commerce, cloud computing and digital innovation, had the highest revenue share of the bunch in the past year. The company’s success lies in a multi-layered business model that exerts a lasting influence on modern business paradigms. Google (Alphabet), Apple and Meta follow in the sales ranking. One of the reasons for the revenue increases over the last two years is likely to be the numerous staff layoffs. At the start of 2022, the tech companies shown have laid off employees in the four to five-digit range. The wave of redundancies at internet companies, technology groups and start-ups accelerated in the second half of 2022 and has since subsided, as data from the crowd-sourced data portal Layoffs.fyi shows.

Spotify, the Swedish-based podcast and music streaming platform, released its Q2 earnings for 2024 on Monday. Since its launch 16 years ago, the company has become one of the world’s leading platforms in the field, listened to by some 626 million monthly active users, 246 million of whom (approx. 39 percent) are paying for a premium subscription. The following chart looks more closely at the topic, asking: how does the audio streaming platform’s popularity vary around the world? Data from Statista’s Consumer Insights macro survey shows that respondents in Mexico as well as Sweden, the latter of which is Spotify’s hometurf, are particularly likely to have paid for Spotify among the polled countries. In the United Kingdom and Spain, just under a third of respondents had used the premium version of the service, while in France, this was significantly lower (18 percent). South Korea stands out for its low uptake of the service, with only 5 percent of respondents having purchased a subscription in the past year. This is partly due to the fact that the country’s respondents opted for homegrown online music services such as Melon and Genie or for YouTube Music.

Tesla reported this week that second-quarter 2024 earnings were down more than 40 percent year-on-year to $1.48 billion, compared with $2.70 billion in Q2 2023. The electric vehicle manufacturer has cut prices to cope with increased competition from other manufacturers and slowing demand while increasing spending on artificial intelligence projects (on-board computers, sensors), all of which caused its profit margin to shrink considerably. As the following infographic shows, after peaking at almost 30 percent two years ago, Tesla's profit margin fell below 20 percent at the beginning of last year, then below 15 percent in the second quarter of 2024 (14.6 percent). This is the lowest profit margin recorded by the company in over five years.
