New approval for highway applications in Florida The #TRUGRD / TRUGRD stream family of products has achieved a significant milestone: the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has formally approved the entire sensor family for #highway applications. During the tests the radar sensor demonstrated performance of >95% counting accuracy on 8 lanes simultaneously. The radar sensor performs day and night, under adverse weather conditions and has a camera integrated for streaming video. Take a look at this roundabout use case from smartmicro UK, featuring 10 smartmicro sensors - the single largest number of radars their team has ever installed on a single site in the UK. Congratulations to everyone involved!
The largest roundabout in Plymouth made more efficient with smartmicro radars Marsh Mills is the largest and busiest roundabout in Plymouth, Devon which sees around 35,000 vehicle movements a day. This roundabout was recently refurbished, and our detectors were selected over loops and magnetometers to provide the detection. Due to the size of the roundabout, it was deduced that ten sensors would be required - the single largest number of radars we have installed on a single site in the UK. This was a massive undertaking which required two engineers to attend the site over a period of two night closures and one day on site, however all ten radars were installed, set up and commissioned on schedule. We asked Matthew Williams MOVA specialist from JSTSM, why smartmicro radars were chosen over traditional detection methods: “We originally produced a design in 2016 that included traditional detection, this would have required a lot of additional ducting especially on the entries to the roundabout, including the A38 which is a trunk road. At the time, due to the location of some of the detection, even then we were looking at an above ground solution due to maintenance concerns. A second scheme was produced using alternative forms of detection, but this still required significant TM to install the detection. Finally, when the smartmicro radar was available we were able to produce a design that removed many of the maintenance issues associated with detection installed in the carriageway, and also the requirement for extensive ducting on the entries to the roundabout.” Nigel Taylor, Traffic Signals Engineer at Plymouth City Council commented: “smartmicro detection had been used on a few sites previously within Plymouth and working with both our maintenance contractor, SWARCO and MOVA specialist JSTSM, we opted to use smartmicro UMRR-11 series radars for the above ground detection. The roundabout has been commissioned and is successfully running on MOVA and the cost savings provided by using the smartmicro radars was substantial.” Marsh Mills Roundabout was a very large project where the non-intrusive technology of our multi-lane radars was clearly endorsed as the best solution by the consultants and customer alike. Not only was there the performance capability of the radar sensors paramount but coupled with the zero-maintenance required this offered the customer a huge cost-benefit. First COM HUB deployed in Germany Technology that has previously been deployed around the world has now made it to Germany! The first COM HUB in Germany has been installed in #Kaiserslautern. The COM HUB is an edge device, a centralized hub for connecting and synchronizing up to six #sensors. It enables the data collection and storage of all connected sensors, cloud connectivity, making the installation very quick and simple by utilizing pluggable terminal blocks for power and data interfaces. Due to its design, the expandable platform can also be used for V2X applications. The installation in Kaiserslautern is part of a long-term collaboration project with the city and is our first test site in Germany. Providing cities with the most advanced technology for traffic management is a clear goal of smartmicro - and making sure the customer knows how to use its full capabilities is just as important. smartmicro UK has given an amazing example of an installation and training done for the City of Malmö - great work, team!
Our Managing Director Peter Eccleson and Business Development Manager Charlie Eccleson recently visited our customer - City of Malmö in Sweden to train and support the city traffic engineers in installing our TRUGRD sensors on a busy city intersection very close to the railway station. This junction had a requirement for four TRUGRD radar sensors to monitor both general traffic and a dedicated bus lane. One day after training the engineers from the City of Malmö’s dedicated traffic signals team, they installed and commissioned two radars under supervision from Charlie and expressed a great deal of satisfaction with the results of their work and the performance of the detection on this junction. Congratulations to the team involved!
