Hello from the 2024 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Athens, Greece! 🇬🇷 This week, our Space Data Software Engineer, Fabian Schöttl, and Data Scientist, Christian Mollière presented our current roadmap to create sub-daily Land Surface Temperature (LST) readings as we launch our new batch of thermal platforms. Determining the exact temperature of any area, with a high revisit rate, allows scientists to study the effects of climate change and other weather events from one hour to the next. This high revisit rate also allows us insights into specific processes like water stress in vegetation and urban heat analysis, both of which are difficult to measure at scale on the ground. Also at the conference, we supported our newest partner, the Hellenic Space Center! With their booth, we were able to show the attendees our plan to help protect Greece from wildfires with our unique wildfire detection network. A huge thank you to the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) for the invite to present and the attendees for taking an interest in our system! #EarthObservation #IGARSS2024 #Space #GeoScience Dimitris Bliziotis MSc., MEng. This week, we had the rare opportunity to give an in-depth overview of our cutting-edge FOREST-3 sensor to the Bavarian State Secretary of the Interior Sandro Kirchner, MdL, and the Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery Florian Herrmann! 🛰️ FOREST-3 was developed right here in the heart of Bavaria, at our headquarters in Munich's vibrant tech ecosystem. This development has resulted in us creating our newest workhouse, the building block of all future wildfire management constellations as we continuously research and implement detection hardware and AI to make the world a safer place. The Bavarian Stattsregierung has always encouraged our success as we build life-saving solutions for the entire world. Thank you for the support and for letting us stop by, Herr Sandro Kircher and Herr Florian Herrmann! As I am in Greece right now, it took me a while to share my thoughs on this. First of all, I am thrilled to partner with the Greek Government to enhance wildfire monitoring and prevention efforts using our advanced Earth observation technology! This achievement marks a pivotal step in our mission to combat climate change and mitigate extreme fire activity. However, while our technology provides crucial support, the true heroes in this fight are the brave men and women on the front lines. Yesterday, I witnessed several helicotpers picking up water in heavy wind conditions just a couple of meters over the open sea. I am humbled by the dedication and courage of the firefighters and pilots who risk their lives daily to protect our communities and natural resources. Their relentless efforts inspire us to continue innovating and providing the best possible tools to aid in their mission. 🧑🚒🚁🌊 Our mission is to support and appreciate everyone fighting at the frontline of climate change, as we work together towards a safer and more sustainable future. 🌱🔥 #WildfirePrevention #EarthObservation #ClimateChange #Heroes #Firefighters #Greece #OroraTech
Together with our partners in Greece, we have some very exciting news to announce! 🇬🇷 We have officially partnered with the Hellenic Space Center and Hellenic Ministry of Digital Governance to provide a nationwide wildfire management solution. As a result, we will establish the first-ever national orbital wildfire monitoring and management network. First responders will have direct access to the platform when we integrate our Wildfire Solution with the Greek emergency services. This creates seamless wildfire detection and management for this fire season as well as subsequent ones. Together with the European Space Agency - ESA’s Earth Observation Programme, we will make a real difference in Greece by combating wildfires as they occur, helping to mitigate unnecessary destruction and curb climate change. #GoodFire science is sound, so why has its application declined so much? I was fortunate to attend the #ForestryAustralia #FireSummit in warm and sunny Melbourne this week, where this vital topic was considered. With a focus on #PrescribedFire and an audience ranging from practitioners to scientists to policy makers, the speakers presented relevant and timely content to delegates - stimulating frank and robust discussion! Two contrasting images stood out for me, both from Ed Hatherley from Parks and Wildlife Service Western Australia (part of Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions); firstly the frustrating decadal trends graph of #GoodFire vs #Wildfire in SW WA, contrasting against the positivity and beauty of healthy fire being applied in the same landscape. Delegates shouldn't be disheartened - within the fire community the benefits of #GoodFire is well known, and through your efforts the narrative will slowly change as the rest of Australia starts to understand. Changing the language and how we communicate about #GoodFire is a start! Thank you to Forestry Australia, all the speakers and delegates for an excellent inaugural Summit. Note to self - sit square to the screen in future conferences before taking photos 😐

The research is very clear: wildfires are becoming more frequent and with worse severity. A recent study by the Nature Ecology & Evolution journal found that the number of wildfire situations has doubled in the last 20 years, with the previous seven years holding the six most extreme events. The need for fire mitigation detection and management technology has never been more vital. Our advanced Wildfire Solution tool allows firefighters and forestry managers high-speed detection of vast & remote areas, allowing for a fast response before a blaze becomes out of control. If we can help reduce fires, we can also reduce the CO2 they emit, assisting in slowing climate change. Our Business Development Manager Collin Ratzka was recently featured in a LinkedIn News post about this exact subject. Last night, I fell down a rabbit hole. It started with a LinkedIn News story by Polly Dennison: “Wildfires increasing and worsening.” You might have seen it. If not: a new study, published in Nature Magazine on Monday, analysed years of NASA satellite data. The finding: ‘extreme’ wildfire events (read: the top 0.01% / most intense) became 2.2 times more frequent from 2003 to 2023. The six most extreme events, of 30 million analysed, all happened within the last 7 years. Not great… The news got me thinking about two things: (a) The economic cost of wildfires (the chart below from the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee (chaired by Martin Heinrich) speaks for itself.) (b) How companies – from manufacturers to corporate landlords – can & will protect their real estate and operations in future (insurance is great, but not having to claim on it is even better.) Three ideas spring to mind: 1. They’ll pay private fire crews to conduct pre-emptive burns in the woods around their properties. 2. They’ll deploy crews as/when fires break out (à la Kim Kardashian & Kanye West in 2018.) 3. Those crews could use tech from companies like Dryad Networks (for early fire detection) and OroraTech (to predict how fires will spread, among other things.) Perhaps there are other ways though? I’d love to hear people’s thoughts.
