🌿 2016- 2024: Advancing sustainability in the Colombian Caribbean 🌿 Since 2013, the Tropical Dry Forest Program has been making significant strides in the Colombian Caribbean coast. This program, with 5 projects in 4 departments, focuses on agroforestry and silvopastoral systems 🌳, stabilizing agricultural borders, and reforesting with native species 🌱. And the results are clearly visible ! 👏🏽 Take a look at the progress made in the Santa Rita de la Sierra reserve (Sierra Nevada, Dibulla, Guajira). Thanks to the NICFIPlanetLabs tool, you can visualize how it’s been going since 2016 until 2023. The program has promoted water source recovery 💧 and enhanced crop resilience to climate change 🌦️. Efforts to diversify crops have boosted food sovereignty 🍽️ and provided economic alternatives to deforestation, improving incomes and quality of life. The program also fosters experience exchange among farmers, valuing indigenous knowledge, and promoting ecological entrepreneurship 🚜. It directly benefits 150 people and indirectly supports 300 displaced and Afro-descendant families, while also sensitizing local authorities to sustainable practices. 🌊 Empowering the Mooiuitsig fishing cooperative in Cape Town ! 🌊 This month, @ABALOBI hosted a transformative workshop for 10 members of the Mooiuitsig SSF Cooperative, including 7 inspiring women. This event aimed to equip small-scale fishers with 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲. 🐟💪 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Informal work and undocumented payment represent significant barriers to financial inclusion in small-scale fisheries, especially for women. ABALOBI is committed to 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 in this male-dominated industry by training them in roles like data collection and quality control, helping them carve out their own space within the community. 🚀 The 22-member Mooiuitsig cooperative in Betty's Bay is already making a name for itself : their Vice-Chairperson is the first qualified female skipper in the Kogelberg area! 🌟 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀: 🌐 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Members addressed challenges like obtaining permits and accessing equipment. ✨ 𝗔𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗕𝗜 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Participants learned about ABALOBI’s mission to leverage technology and enhance sustainability. Misconceptions were cleared, revealing the benefits of partnering with ABALOBI. 📱 𝗙𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗽𝗽 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Practical demonstrations showed how easy it is to log data using the ABALOBI FISHERApp. Enthusiasm was high as fishers embraced its practicality. 💰📈 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: An interactive session on spending habits and savings offered valuable tips for daily life. 💧 Watering the seeds of change: Tunisia's reforestation journey 🌳 This week, the CAPTE team took part in a critical irrigation action for reforested plots in Hammam Biadha, Le Krib, Siliana region. With climate change extending the hot season, successful reforestation requires diligent follow-up and care. The plots were initially planted in December 2023, following devastating fires several months before, in collaboration with the Siliana Forestry District. 🌱 As summer conditions intensify, supplemental irrigation is vital to the survival of planted trees. The Siliana Forest District and CAPTE monitor these areas to ensure their optimal development and health.🤝 This initiative is a significant part of their ongoing partnership, aligning with the national reforestation strategy. It is also an essential component of ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas's agroecological initiative. Exciting progress on the @EMMA4EU front! 📚🌿 Our team just concluded a productive two-day meeting in @Wageningen University, hitting a major milestone: 🎉 We’ve finalized the structure and table of contents for our e-learning modules on Deforestation-Free Supply Chains (DFSC)! With the framework set, we're diving into content creation. Our aim is to provide professionals with the knowledge to implement deforestation-free practices in supply chains. Key achievements: - ✅ Agreed on module structure and educational aims - 📊 Defined ECTS credits for each module - 🤝 Identified partner contributions and responsibilities - 📅 Set deadlines for curriculum draft and content development Next steps: Developing engaging and comprehensive content for each module! 🌍✍️ We also held two stakeholder roundtables on Compliance and CSR, discussing the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Key insights include the need for more knowledge and trained professionals, transparency in supply chains, and collaboration at landscape levels. While the #EUDR presents challenges, it’s a crucial step towards sustainable, deforestation-free supply chains. Our e-learning modules will address these needs, fostering knowledge exchange, building capacity, and promoting collaboration across the sector.
