Info

Did you know about the horned screamer, a large bird found in Peru? It is related to ducks and geese but has a game bird-like bill and partly webbed, huge feet for walking on floating vegetation. Unique for its thin, up to 15 cm horn growing from its forehead, which is ornamental rather than a weapon. Named for their loud, distinctive calls, these birds mate for life and are easily heard in the Amazon. At FZS.Peru, our mission is to conserve such species-rich ecosystems of Peru's Amazon. We work together with SERNANP, focusing on protected areas to ensure the continued preservation of our natural heritage. #WildlifeWednesday : Efforts to restore the once-thriving lion population in the Nsumbu landscape are underway through collaborative initiatives led by the NTCP and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Over a decade ago, lions faced extinction due to rampant poaching and prey depletion, disrupting the region's ecological balance. A long-term plan focused on reintroducing lions and targeted conservation education under the SUFINA program enables communities to engage and understand the pivotal role of apex predators like lions in maintaining the ecosystem's health. SUFINA is short for a local Tabwa phrase that loosely translates to “conserve our natural resources for the future.” Together, these endeavors advocate for restoring Nsumbu's biodiversity. #MeetMonday: Hello everyone, I'm Ana Lucia Bermúdez, and I am making conservation count in the Colombian Amazon. 🌿🐢 I was born in Bogotá, Colombia, but I've been living and working in the Amazon for over 20 years. My conservation journey began with a passion for marine biology, leading me to study aquatic ecosystems. Upon arriving in the Amazon, I focused on monitoring river dolphins, otters, manatees, and turtles. My Master's degree in Amazonian Studies deepened my commitment to conserving freshwater turtles. I am currently working to recognize the importance of aquatic turtles in Amazonian ecosystems inhabited and managed by indigenous territories. For the past eight years, I've worked with FZS, collaborating with indigenous communities to conserve the Colombian Amazon's biodiversity. A special place for me is the Cahuinarí National Park. Established in 1987 to conserve the charapa turtle, this park is managed in collaboration with indigenous peoples, forming a vital biological-cultural corridor. The "Community Monitoring Strategy for the Conservation of the Charapa Turtle" is a key project where indigenous families protect nesting beaches and critical flood zones, strengthening both turtle conservation and indigenous governance. My super talent? Fieldwork. I thrive in remote natural environments, collaborating with indigenous communities to tackle conservation challenges. Plus, I'm a dessert enthusiast! 🍰 📸: Daniel Rosengren #ConservationJourney #CahuinaríNationalPark #FrankfurtZoologicalSociety #MakingConservationCount #AmazonConservation #IndigenousKnowledge

Marromeu National Reserve, spanning 1,500 km², is a vital part of the nearly 11,000 km² (about twice the width of the United States) Marromeu Complex in Mozambique. This area is one of Africa's most significant wetlands, showcasing a rich mosaic of ecosystems, including savannas, grasslands, swamps, forests, and mangroves. Designated by the IUCN as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA), Marromeu plays a critical role in global biodiversity. Marromeu also supports the largest breeding colonies of Great White Pelicans in southern Africa and is a crucial breeding site for the endangered Wattled Crane. The reserve also protects a significant buffalo population, along with elephants, waterbuck, zebras, hyenas, and leopards. The project has started and is in an early stage, with current efforts including the creation of a geodatabase to monitor ecological and socio-economic metrics, ensuring the reserve's long-term conservation.
