We build coalitions for change & promote informed debate about Europe’s role in the world: ecfr.eu
Info
The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) is an award-winning international think-tank that aims to conduct cutting-edge independent research on European foreign and security policy and to provide a safe meeting space for decision-makers, activists and influencers to share ideas. We build coalitions for change at the European level and promote informed debate about Europe’s role in the world. In 2007, ECFR’s founders set about creating a pan-European institution that could combine establishment credibility with intellectual insurgency. Today, ECFR remains uniquely placed to continue providing a pan-European perspective on some of the biggest strategic challenges and choices Europeans need to confront, with a network of offices in seven European capitals, over 60 staff from more than 25 different countries and a team of associated researchers in the EU 28 member states. 🎧New wee, new podcast! In the latest episode of the World in 30 Minutes, Mark Leonard welcomes his fellow authors – policy fellow Alicja Bachulska, and ECFR Asia programme director and senior policy fellow, Janka Oertel– to discuss the book’s themes: power, progress, and people. How is the global order shifting vis-à-vis China and US competition? In what ways are Chinese thinkers writing and defining progress, and how does this differ from Western conceptions of progress? 📽ACM recap video! Our Annual Council Meeting 2024, held on 4-5 July in Madrid, focused on Europe’s potential reinvention in light of the recent European elections and the French parliamentary election. These events, alongside significant geopolitical shifts in defense, security, trade, green technology, and enlargement, challenged Europe to retool as a hard power in a world of deterrence and derisking. Key discussions addressed how to best defend #Ukraine, stabilize the #MiddleEast, manage strategic interdependence, reduce risks, and establish new relationships with middle powers in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. As #Europe navigated these challenges amidst the decisive polls in France and the #UK, the appointment of top EU positions, and the upcoming #NATO summit in Washington, the ECFR Annual Council Meeting aimed to chart a new strategic course for Europe in 2024 and beyond. Over the past few years, the United Arab Emirates has emerged as a key player in Africa's energy sectors, including oil, gas, renewables, and critical minerals. This growth is driven by its ambition to lead the global energy transition and is supported by its substantial resources. 🌍As Senior Policy Fellow Maddalena Procopio and Visiting Fellow Corrado Cok argue in their latest policy brief, rather than viewing the UAE as a rival, Europe should pursue cooperation in areas of mutual interest. 📢Join ECFR experts and panelists online on 23 July from 11-12 CEST for "UAE-Africa nexus: Navigating a new multipolar landscape."
