🏆 𝗘𝗨𝗞𝗜 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: It's possible and cost-effective to power the Polish city Hajnówka with renewable energy🔋 A feasibility study by EUKI project 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿-𝘁𝗼-𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗷𝗻ó𝘄𝗸𝗮 demonstrates that converting the coal-based district heating system of Hajnówka to large heat pumps powered by renewable energy is technically feasible, economically viable, and environmentally beneficial. The switch would reduce CO2 emissions by 84%, cutting GHG emissions by 22-24 tonnes annually. Despite initial investment costs of around €25 million, the project promises stable heat prices and significant long-term savings. The success has inspired similar initiatives, including a follow-up project in #Bitola, North Macedonia. Our colleague Elsa Benhöfer participated in the Civil Society and Think Tank Forum last week together with representatives from #EUKIProjects. This event served to prepare the preliminary inputs for the Berlin Process Summit 2024. The Berlin Process Summit fosters cooperation between the Western Balkans, EU countries, and international financial institutions, civil society, youth, and businesses through high-level meetings and diverse forums, supporting regional initiatives and EU projects. This week in Skopje, we kicked off the Civil Society and Think Tank Forum (CSF) 2024 with a gathering of 130 participants from 15 countries to prepare preliminary inputs for the Berlin Process. As the CSF Prep Forum has come to a close, we look back with gratitude on three days of inspiring and fruitful exchanges. 🗣️ Within seven thematic working groups, participants formulated recommendations for Western Balkans stakeholders: EU Integration & the Berlin Process; the Past & Reconciliation; Gender & Diversity; Common Regional Market & Mobility; Energy, Climate Change, & Decarbonization; Environmental Protection & Sustainable Economic Development; and Disinformation & Cyber Threats. Each group's rapporteurs will now translate the discussions into concrete policy recommendations for decision-makers. 💡Inside and outside of the working group discussions, the Prep Forum brought visibility to civil society perspectives and fostered closer ties between organizations within the region and beyond. Among countless special moments, highlights include a special session on combatting shrinking spaces for civil society, input on the German Federal Foreign Office's expectations for the Berlin Process 2024 by Kamila Wensierska-Łajca, and commentary by Valeska Esch on civil society's initial recommendations based on this week's discussion. 🎤 Looking to the fall, these recommendations will be showcased at our Main Forum, an event held alongside the Berlin Process Summit with participants from civil society, think tanks, government, and other stakeholders from the Western Balkans and the EU. We would like to express our most heartfelt thanks to our working group leads, who moderated this week's discussions: Institute for Democracy Societas Civilis Skopje - IDSCS, Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia, Reactor - Research in Action, Riinvest Institute, RESET - Sustainable Energy Transition Center, PPNEA, and Media Institute Montenegro. We also extend our gratitude to our speakers and panelists: Ambassador Petra Drexler, Kamila Wensierska-Łajca, and Valeska Esch, as well as Dr. Christian Hagemann, Tina Bories, Viktoria Voglsinger-Palm, and Avi S.. Thank you also to the moderators of the joint session on shrinking spaces for civil society for facilitating these important conversations. We would like to express our appreciation for the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany's generous support, without which the CSF 2024 would not be possible, as well as the German Embassy in Skopje for their engagement and support over the past several weeks. It has been our pleasure to partner once again with the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft e.V., our co-organizers for the CSF 2024. And finally, we would like to thank all participants, whose energy, dedication, and insights made the Prep Forum a success. We are looking forward to continuing these exchanges at the Main Forum! #BerlinProcess10 #AspenWB #WesternBalkans #CivilSociety

💨🐦 How can we advance the expansion of wind energy and protect biodiversity at the same time? 🤝This question is often discussed in the media. EUKI project #Wind4Bio is working on an answer. The project's name speaks for itself: #Wind4Bio promotes the convergence of wind energy and biodiversity policies by involving civil society to find a consented transition to renewable energy sources. 📑In their latest report #Wind4Bio evaluates a consultation mechanism developed for the project. It is an online platform that facilitates communication between environmental and civil society organisations regarding biodiversity threats in areas with wind farms. The report outlines the development process, testing feedback from partners like Green Liberty | Zaļā brīvība and WiseEuropa, and provides recommendations for improving the online platform.
