!!! 50 Years of EMBL - 50 Years of Leading Research in Molecular Biology !!! In 2024, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory is celebrating its 50th anniversary; having participated in the 40th Anniversary festivities, time has passed quickly - and the occasion deserves a dedicated post of admiration and appreciation. Headquartered in my hometown Heidelberg, Germany 🇩🇪 the EMBL is a lighthouse research institute and teaching hub on molecular biology, and includes outstations in Rome, Grenoble, Hamburg, and Barcelona with leading activities on key areas of the life sciences, such as the European Bioinformatics Institute | EMBL-EBI in Hinxton near Cambridge UK, training EMBL-EBI Training, and EMBL Events. From the start of my studies on molecular biology the EMBL has had an incredibly strong and magic power of attraction, thrill and inspiration. Ever since I set foot on campus, working at EMBL first with Klaus Scheffzek in Structural Biology, then with Eileen Furlong in Genome Biology and at the EMBL biotech spin-off company Cellzome, now a GSK company, my career has drawn from the immense inspiration and impetus this amazing environment has provided. Congratulations EMBL, and with that of course also to mother organization EMBO, on 50 years of „exploring the secrets of life“ at the leading edge of molecular biology. Europe-wide, global impact, infinite curiosity. The European Molecular Biology Laboratory is a powerhouse of biological expertise. Since 1974, EMBL has been leading the way in European molecular biology and the life sciences. Today, with support from 29 member states, EMBL researchers continue to expand this scientific frontier. I am especially grateful to my mentors and supervisors at EMBL and Cellzome, for making this experience possible, on which I am looking back with joy and pride: #KlausScheffzek, Eileen Furlong, Angela Bauch (who took me on as an associate in my first job at a #biotech #company > 20 years ago in 2002), and Giulio Superti-Furga, at the time Co-Founder and heading the Heidelberg site of Cellzome (recipient of the Lennart Philipson Award 2024 during the Symposium on occasion of the 50th Anniversary Festivities - on the picture below shown jointly with my wife Michaela Brehme and President at the European Research Council (ERC), Maria Leptin) ! Thank you, happy anniversary, and all the best for the next 50 years of excellence in molecular biology to come !!! Meet Melanie Schneider, an ARISE fellow whose project combines the bioinformatics expertise of EMBL-EBI with the structural biology competence of EMBL Grenoble. Her research focuses on studying protein flexibility and drug adaptability. Melanie is also exploring how to streamline data analysis with the ultimate aim of facilitating the work of experimental scientists. Read more about Melanie's experience on the ARISE fellowship programme, which trains fellows for a wide range of careers in research infrastructures. 👇 https://lnkd.in/efmCNSGU #researchjobs #researchinfrastructure #lifesciences #drugdiscovery

EMBL’s 50th anniversary symposium was a great success. More than 1000 attendees came together in person and online to celebrate #EMBL50. It was a great occasion to bring together the EMBL community, showcase EMBL’s scientific contributions, and discuss its future directions. A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped to make this symposium possible, to all participants who contributed to the fantastic programme with engaging presentations and lively discussions, and to all the people who support and contribute to EMBL! Last but not least: happy birthday EMBL! We look forward to what the future holds!

If the genome is the blueprint for building an organism, the proteome is the construction crew along with some of the working materials 🏗. By studying all the proteins in an organism, proteomics helps us understand health and disease. It’s also a crucial tool for making personalised medicine a reality. What are some of the challenges and opportunities for researchers wanting to harness the full power of proteomics? Find out how the advanced proteomics technologies and expertise at EMBL are making a difference, and how they could support your research. https://lnkd.in/g-CxN5u9 #proteomics #bioinformatics #massspec #datascience #openaccess

Congratulations, Nick Goldman and Mikhail Savitski! Both EMBL group leaders have been elected as EMBO members in recognition of their research excellence and scientific achievements. EMBO members contribute to shaping European science and fostering research communities across Europe. Every year new EMBO members are elected, thus enriching the community and bringing in knowledge and expertise in emerging research fields in the life sciences. This year the EMBO community of more than 2,000 scientists was joined by 120 new members, including Oliver Billker, a member of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, and eight EMBL alumni.
