Fully agree with Afzal Mangal that telcos should adopt a customer-centric, use-case or niche-driven marketing approach. However, after 25 years in the industry, I've seen telcos "struggle" to be truly customer-centric or effectively address niche markets. Telcos excel at deploying and managing networks using available standards and technologies. Their core competency is building and operating robust connectivity. Telcos will always struggle to deliver value beyond connectivity. They struggle to be customer-centric and tailor their offerings to specific use cases. The "other players" should handle customer-centric marketing and value delivery, leveraging telcos' connectivity. The market should allow telcos to focus on their strength - network management - while allowing the other players to drive customer-centric value delivery. In the end, telcos must receive a fair share of the value created by "applications" that use their "connectivity" to drive innovation and growth. In addition, telcos should also participate in and support entities "outside" their telco organisation to develop the customer and niche centric stuff and create the required additional value.

In our series of trials, following on from Athens, Dover, with its ancient Dover Castle, which has defended England since the beginning of the Common Era, gets a contemporary #smartcity update as NB-IoT/LTE-M technology is successfully trialled with #melita.io connectivity within a well-integrated IoT device, combining antiquity with innovation. In addition, NB-IoT's low power consumption allows devices to run on battery power for extended periods of time, reducing maintenance requirements.
