New article from our #SystemsChangeLab consortium author Joel Jaeger looks at the history of coal plant cancellations in China, India and Vietnam, finding that there have been encouraging reductions in coal project pipelines around the world: 🌏 The top 10 countries with the most coal in development — which are all located in Asia — have decreased their coal project pipeline since 2015. 🌍 9 African countries had plans in 2015 to build their first ever coal plants, but none of these had been built by the end of 2023. 🌎 0 countries in Europe or the Americas increased their coal capacity by more than one gigawatt over that time period. What makes a good 2035 #climate target? We've set out our recipe for governments in our briefing, just released at the Bonn #UNFCCC climate talks. But before they turn to 2035 targets, it's critical that governments first strengthen their 2030 targets: they're not yet 1.5˚C compatible, and most governments don't have the policies in place to meet them. BLOG: The huge gap between net zero and real zero Government over-reliance on carbon dioxide removals to avoid the urgent need to make rapid deep cuts in emissions prolongs the use of fossil fuels, and puts the 1.5˚C warming limit at risk, according to new analysis we've just published. The #netzero plans for 28 countries would result in a combined forest sink of up to 5.7 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, representing 12-15% of their 2019 emissions. Eight of these countries also plan for engineered CO2 removals (such as Direct Air Carbon Capture) of up to 1.3 billion tonnes of CO2, and with an estimated cost of up to USD 400 per tonne of CO2, governments would need to invest hundreds of billions a year for these removals. In our analysis, we looked at the 34 countries it assesses who have net zero pledges. It found that as of May 2024, only 15 provide detailed information on forest/land sinks and/or engineered Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in their net zero target year. It then looked in detail of the plans for 28 of the 34 countries, totalling 81% of global emissions, and found that jointly, their "net zero" commitments would only reduce 80-85% of their emissions, not 100%. For example, Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Viet Nam would still emit more than 30% of their 2019 emissions even after meeting their “net zero target”. The Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies, such as Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) or Biomass Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), still face challenges on cost and availability in terms of biomass, for example. Other technologies like biochar and ocean alkalinisation still require further investigation especially on environmental impacts. Governments must urgently focus their attention on reducing emissions towards real zero, and transparently communicate and differentiate between conventional, engineered and novel CDR based on sea or land in target-setting and progress reporting. BLOG: Since the 2019 EU elections, the EU has significantly improved its climate performance through the Green Deal, and its emissions are now on a path consistent with warming a little above 2˚C, a more than 1˚C improvement from 2019. ( ➡ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eMKuEAHN) While EU emissions are still not on a path compatible with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C limit, this region, one of the world's largest greenhouse gas emitters, is in a good place to now go the extra step necessary to help the world avoid the worst impacts of climate change. In 2019 we estimated EU climate policies would reduce emissions by 33% from 1990 levels, we now estimate emission reductions of around 51%, close to - but short - of its 55% by 2030 target. The UK outperformed its legal target to cut #climate emissions between 2018-2022. Neil Grant, our UK country lead, tells BBCWorld News Today that using this result to carry forward any surplus from the current targets into the next period is risky. These 2018-2022 targets were set when the UK was aiming to cut emissions 80% by 2050. It has since strengthened that goal to reducing 100% of emissions by 2050, alongside more ambitious targets for 2030, 2035.
