Understand that you are learning your craft, and no, you don't know better yet. Identify who are your mentors in the creative team. Not everybody wants to be a mentor. Once you do, be coachable. Spend time writing. Don't settle for one headline. Write a hundred. Whatever job you are assigned to, understand people don't expect brilliant work. They expect not to have to redo the work after you did it. If you mess up, understand how and why. At this stage of your career, you are a carpenter learning his tools. Don't expect to make a table. Fall in love with the process of building it. Also, read these three books: "Mastery" and "48 Laws of Power", by Robert Greene, and "The Copybook", by D&AD. Never forget that reading is your best friend.

He had hired a team a few months before bringing me on and had meticulously trained them in the company’s processes: research, keyword finding, content writing, image design, and posting. I joined late, and he was hesitant, thinking he'd have to go through the whole training process again with me. He told me he'd only proceed if I could write trial content that met their standards. But guess what? I dove in, learned everything on my own, and nailed it with my very first write up. He was amazed—no extra effort needed from him. I ended up working for him for a year and a half.

The best advice I ever received about asking questions as an intern is this: "keep a WTF book". In this book, write down any and all questions that you have, but don't ask any of it until the end of the week. This way, it gives you time to find the answers yourself and also you're not bombarding your boss at random times and breaking their work flow.

If you're working for an agency with a roster of clients, here's an easy way to be proactive. Put each of the client names or logos in one place (jpeg / printout / anywhere you can easiy access them every day). Get an event calendar for this year. Then get brainstorming. What would be a cool thing for brand X do for Mother's Day? How about brand Y and brand Z? There won't always be a good match, but I can guarantee you'll have some good ideas. For bonus points, you can do the same with current events. The added benefit of tactical ads (or social posts) is that they have to go out ASAP, giving the client (or your bosses) less time to mess with the post or advert and dilute the creative idea.

If you want to be the best intern, collabirate with the human colleagues in your office rather than the AI tool. It is understandable that AI has already become an indispensable part if our work, but a human support provides better basic understanding and the AI is an auxiliary one. Understanding every unique style of writing, making your ideas (not the AI suggested one😅) heard, mastering your skills, maintaining networks and more can only happen with the collaborations. Don't worry if in some instances your superior tries to take credit of your work because of this collaborated work. After all, that shows your work is awesome. Internship is the beginning of your career, so let's start it with your hands rather than some robotic hands!

It’s important to think from the perspective of your audience first. Understand who you are targeting and why - what value the product or service you are selling would add to their lives and how this is much greater than the price tag. It’s always important to study the ins and outs of your customers to become a good copywriter. Also, remember thinking is not limited to a 9-5 or within your set working hours only. A good idea can even hit while brewing your favourite cup of coffee!

If the answer is usually 'yes', that means you're growing, and so are your standards. And, as tempted as you will be to facepalm whilst reading your previous creations, focus on the progress you've made instead.

I always tell interns to make themselves part of the furniture. By the time your placement is over, your colleagues should find it hard to imagine NOT having you around. This happens when you make yourself indispensable (by being friendly, professional, proactive, hardworking, enthusiastic, good at what you do and at taking feedback) but also when you take part in the social life at your workplace. Never miss a pub get-together or a party (but please don't drink too much). Become a regular at the office kitchen — because so many work and non-work conversations happen in communal areas rather than in offices or at people's desks. Be seen, be nice, always be there — and chances are, you will get to stay way beyond the internship period.

One advice that I took to heart was: "No two copies are the same." I believe it is a rite of passage to go through a phase where we want all our copies to be witty and snappy and fun. And while there is always a time and space for that, not every copy needs to follow that template. What I have found helpful is paying attention to the way copies are written for different products and different mediums.
