What we do

We are a global community that shares a common interest: to ensure that research outputs and resources are openly available and connected so that their reuse can advance knowledge across and between disciplines, now and in the future.

As a community, we make research more effective with metadata that connects research outputs and resources–from samples and images to data and preprints. We enable the creation and management of persistent identifiers (PIDs), integrate services to improve research workflows, and facilitate the discovery and reuse of research outputs and resources.

Benefits

Maximize impact

  • Adapt to the unique needs of individual domains, users, and use cases
  • Improve interoperability with other infrastructure providers such as Crossref, ORCID, and the Research Organization Registry (ROR)
  • Connect research outputs through service integration

Improve efficiencies

  • Benefit from resource sharing and economies of scale as a registration collective
  • Streamline implementation to ensure compliance and follow best practices (e.g., FAIR)
  • Simplify the DOI registration process and take advantage of DataCite technology
  • Track organizational influence and make reporting easier

Make a difference

  • Contribute to our development roadmap
  • Work with an organization active in the Open Science community
  • Join the discussion on the DataCite page of the PID Forum

Strategic Plan 2022-2025

During 2021, building on our core values, our community went through a strategic visioning process to understand current perspectives of DataCite, how we can thrive in the future, and what roadblocks might get in the way of achieving our vision. The Strategic Plan 2022-2025 is the outcome of the process and provides the blueprint for achieving our vision and mission by aligning with the needs of the DataCite community. The plan continues to support our statutory charitable purpose as a not-for-profit organization.

DataCite’s Strategy House

DataCite’s Commitment to The Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI)

DataCite was founded in 2009 on the principle of being an open stakeholder-governed community that is open to participation from organizations around the world. Today, that continues to be true. Although our services have expanded, we continue to remain grounded in our roots. DataCite’s umbrella was formed with the aim to safeguard common standards worldwide to support research, thereby facilitating compliance with the rules of good scientific practice. We sustain open infrastructure services to ensure that research outputs and resources are easily findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). DataCite’s services are foundational components of the scholarly ecosystem. As the ecosystem continues to evolve, governance, sustainability and living-will insurance have become increasingly important components of the open infrastructure.

Together with several open scholarly infrastructure organizations and initiatives, DataCite adopted The Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure in 2021. DataCite conducted its own audit against the principles.
