ARTE NOIR in the Central District is a non-profit arts organization that features Black artists not only from Seattle but from all over the world. Founded by Vivian Phillips, a passionate arts leader with decades of experience advocating for Seattle’s creative community, ARTE NOIR emerged in May 2021 as an online publication dedicated to showcasing and uplifting Black art, artists, and culture.
In June 2021, ARTE NOIR opened its brick-and-mortar location at the corner of 23rd & Union within the new Midtown Square development. ARTE NOIR used Equitable Development Initiative (EDI) funding to secure over 3,000 square feet of space, for a permanent gallery, a Black culture retail space, and a small recording studio, preventing physical and cultural displacement and fostering community empowerment. All products and items in the shop are made by Black creatives who receive 100% of net proceeds from their products and goods sold in the shop.
As an anchor owner in the new Midtown Square development, ARTE NOIR is establishing generational control and building a more equitable future. This vibrant space serves as a hub for cultural celebration, creativity, and economic mobility for Black artists and culture makers in Seattle.
