While working as a waiter, Nah-Dja Tien would line up with his colleagues to have his fingernails, clothing and breath checked by his manager, and if something wasn’t right, they would be hit in the head with a stick. “This is ONE way of mentorship.” Laughs out Nah-Dja. Mauricio Schuler asked one of the most inspirational people that he knows about the role of mentorship in hospitality and we were shocked by the stories we heard. Though mentorship has been around hospitality from its beginnings. In the past decade the rise of mentorship programs has changed its relevance and finding the right mentors for aspiring hospitality professionals became a game changer for career development. “𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤-𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.” This is a common saying among the industry. During his days working with a celebrity chef in Australia, Mauricio Schuler was working 80 hours a week. He approached the head chef to ask when his hours would be back to the normal schedule, only to be answered: “𝑴𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒐, 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒚 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒚𝒔?” Truth is, for hospitality professionals, work-life balance is measured differently.
