Cuts threatens staff, programming, and services at hundreds of arts and culture organizations long-term

City Hall, NY – With a looming June 30 city budget deadline, New York City Council leaders, joined by many iconic and community-based New York City arts and cultural institutions, rallied at City Hall to call on Mayor Adams’ Administration to prioritize fully restoring cuts to arts and culture in the budget.

City Hall – Today, the New York City Council voted to strengthen residential building safety by establishing a risk based structural inspection system to identify hazardous buildings, using predictive analytics to weigh factors including but not limited to building data, violation history, compliance filings, and disciplinary history of registered design professionals.

Administration’s failure to agree on investments would leave thousands of preschool-aged children and families without access to needed childcare and legally required services

City Hall, NY – Days ahead of the impending June 30 city budget deadline, New York City Council leaders, unions representing education workers, parents of preschool children, and early childhood education providers and advocates rallied at City Hall to call on the Mayor to agree to restorations of cuts and investments in early childhood education programs.

Tonight, at its final public hearing, the Rent Guidelines Board voted to authorize 2.75% rent increases for one-year leases and 5.25% increases for two-year leases of rent-stabilized units. In response, Speaker Adrienne Adams issued the following statement.

“At a time when New Yorkers are struggling to afford to stay in their homes and communities, this is a rent hike that will place too many of the nearly one million rent-stabilized tenants at risk of housing instability.

Today, the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at the New School and the Center for Community Uplift at Brookings released a report which found that subways and buses, which serve a higher rate of low-income riders of color, are subsidized significantly less per trip than other modes of public transportation, including NYC Ferry, whose ridership skew whiter and more affluent.

Council also voted on its modifications to City of Yes: Zoning for Economic Opportunity to add environmental, health, and quality of life protections while promoting local businesses, and package of legislation tackling pay disparities in municipal workforce

City Hall – Today, the New York City Council voted to pass legislation that would require the advice and consent of the Council as part of the appointment process for 20 additional city agency commissioners, upon subsequent approval by voters in a citywide election.
