Seven Spires’ Adrienne Cowan on Building a Fortress: Beyond the Boys’ Club Podcast

Adrienne Cowan of Seven Spires joins Beyond the Boys Club, the latest addition to the Consequence Podcast Network. Beyond the Boys Club is hosted by journalist, musician, and radio host Anne Erickson of Audio Ink Radio and the music outfit Upon Wings, spinning off from the interview column of the same name. The series highlights women and non-binary musicians as they offer their perspectives on the industry and discuss their personal experiences. Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.

Seven Spires vocalist Adrienne Cowan has quite a backstory, one that starts with classical singing and evolves into her fronting one of the most exciting symphonic metal acts on the rise. The band’s new album, A Fortress Called Home, is out Friday, June 21st, and explores the many different shades and colors of symphonic and progressive metal.

As a younger woman in metal music, Cowan appreciates how females ahead of her paved the way. While she says she had a little bit of pushback in the early 2010s, for the most part, she’s felt accepted as a woman in heavy metal music.

“The woman that worked in the industry before me, I think, for decades really suffered a lot. I think they walked so that people in my shoes could run, and I think about this all the time. This is, as the kids say, my Roman Empire.”

She does note that there’s still some pushback with people “saying disgusting things, like, sexual,” online.

“This is a whole other topic, right?” she says. “I also think that it’s not a bad thing to embrace all aspects of who you are as an artist, and if you look good, you look good. That’s not a problem. But, the thing is, I don’t look at comments anymore on YouTube or anything. Most of the time, I don’t want to see some idiot who’s like, ‘I wonder if she screams like that in bed,’ or whatever. It’s so below the radar of things I need to worry about.”

During this episode of the Beyond the Boys Club podcast, Cowan discusses her journey into music, the new album, her experience as a woman in the industry, and more.
