Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, the art-pop duo Faux Real dig into the themes behind the song and video for “Walking Away from My Demons.”
Faux Real have no problem leaning into lore. The two French-American brothers have made their synth-pop project Faux Real into a grand, overarching universe, with its own terminology, history, and surreal aesthetic. Now, with their debut album, Faux Ever, arriving on October 11th, the duo is clearly having fun with some world-building.
“Walking Away from My Demons” is the latest offering, and it’s futuristic and nostalgic all at once. The highly-syncopated drum machines beneath the Arndt brothers generate enough momentum for them to burst into a falsetto-laden chorus, where the groove switches and the mood gets empowering.
Keeping the highly conceptual, absurdist tone is “Walking Away from My Demons'” video, which features Faux Real as angels in a concrete “heaven” in Los Angeles while their Heely-riding demon counterparts taunt them. It’s heavily choreographed, selectively shot, and exactly what Faux Real do best.
“We wrote the first version of this song several years ago and immediately started performing it as part of our live show. It became an audience favorite and fans have been hounding us ever since for its official release,” Faux Real tell Consequence. “We’re now on the 26th version of the song (at least) and can proudly say it’s maybe ready now!!!”
