We would like to express our gratitude for the wonderful opportunity to host playwright, and former CW employee, Ashley Smiley, and actors Anna Marie Sharpe and Jamella Cross for their incredible reading from the play, “Dirty White Teslas Make Me Sad,” which made its world premiere at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco.
The play shines a light on the contradictions in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood and the impact of gentrification on Black communities. We are thrilled that the piece has received the prestigious Gerbode Foundation Theatre Commission Award, the Theatre Bay Area’s Relly Lossy Award for New Play 2023-24, and has been featured in Broadway World.
This success highlights the importance of uplifting stories that empower communities. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Smiley, Anna, and Jamella for their outstanding work. For more updates, please follow them on Instagram.

At Community Works, we believe in a future where justice demands humanity.
CJCJ has just released a new report examining AB 109 funding.
“...We conclude that AB 109 reporting is unsystematic, allowing critical planning and spending decisions to go unscrutinized…”
That begs the question, can we imagine a future that is just, without transparency?
