By Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science staff

March 17 was an exciting day for both Mayo Clinic's Alix School of Medicine and School of Graduate Medical Education. Fourth-year medical students in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota learned where they will continue their residency training. Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education also learned who would be its incoming Mayo residents through the National Resident Matching Program.

Match Day, held on the third Friday in March, is where medical students at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and at medical schools around the U.S. and the world learn which U.S. residency program they will train at for the next three to seven years.

Fourth-year medical students opened their envelopes at the same time, 11 a.m. CT, to discover their future specialties and residency training locations. Opening of the envelope symbolizes the beginning of their medical career.

Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education also looks forward to Match Day each year, as the school is on the receiving end, learning what medical school graduates will continue their training at Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education is one of the nation's largest schools of graduate medical education, with a total enrollment of more than 1,900 physicians in training.

Students can graduate from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine or another qualifying institution, complete their specialty and subspecialty training at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, and continue their professional medical career as members of the Mayo Clinic staff. Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education is critically important to Mayo Clinic's future since the school has trained half of Mayo's current physicians.

Dr. Meyer's closing words for the fourth-year medical students reiterated Mayo's values to guide them as they move forward.

"As you embark on the next stage of your training, I want to remind you that you represent Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, and with that comes sharing your extraordinary medical school training with others, our Mayo Clinic Model of Care and how you have thrived through medical school during a pandemic using proven resilience and well-being techniques that will support you throughout your career," he said.
