It was a pleasure to be with a distinguished and impressive group of global experts discussing Project 23.919 for the regulation of AI in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 , led by Congressman Oscar Izquierdo and organized by the Global Network of Centers. This initiative has the potential to benefit many other policymakers in the region who are engaged in similar discussions about AI governance. The workshop was possible due to the support and teamwork of Kirsten Müller-Daubermann, Noha Lea Halim, Ana María Castillo, Camila Hidalgo, Fernanda S. and Lionel Brossi. We had the opportunity to discuss various building blocks of this regulation and explore how research on ethics and governance of AI can aid in its drafting and implementation. It is necessary to delve into capabilities to improve data quality, promote the interoperability of principles, ensure the protection of human rights, define the specific impacts of AI, and encourage experimentation. We will be sharing the main recommendations and feedback from the experts in the coming weeks. 🎓 Recognition of Studies, Degrees and Diplomas #UNESCO - #ASCUN - #MEN in #Latin #America 🗓 On April 26, 2024, the Academic Evaluation Services, Inc. [AES] attended the webinar provided by the #ASCUN, #MEN with the support of #UNESCO. There were over 154 attendees representing major universities in Latin America! 🇨🇴 The Colombian Association of Universities (#ASCUN) and the Subdirectorate of Quality Assurance of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education (#MEN), with the support of the #UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean ( UNESCO IESALC ), have organized the webinar on Recognition of Studies, Degrees and Diplomas in Higher Education. 🎯 The purpose of the event was to present to the #HEIs the current developments regarding the #UNESCO World Convention on the #Recognition of #Qualifications Relating to Higher Education and the main advances and actions carried out by the #Colombian #Government in the field of education. 🔆 The highlight of the webinar was the presentation of the special guest, Dr. Francesc Pedró, the Director of UNESCO IESALC , on the Regional Convention and UNESCO World Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Related to Higher Education: two Instruments for the promotion of academic cooperation. ❓ ✒ During the Q&A Academic Evaluation Services asked two specific questions on the statistics of Latin American students studying in the #USA and #Europe and whether there existed programs for #refugee students geared towards their acceptance and assistance. Thanks to Ms. Diane Quarless, Director of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters for the Caribbean, for inviting me to participate, as a chair of the Executive Committee of Statistical Conference of the Americas (SCA), in a virtual expert group meeting on Wednesday 26 June to examine issues related to the production and international compilation of statistics on key sustainable development issues for associate member countries (AMCs) of ECLAC. I have the opportunity to address the closing remarks to the participants sharing 3 main points on how the #SCA can help us to strengthen the relationship with the Caribbean region. 1. SCA is the best countries forum to strengthen the leadership of the region in the multilateral level. 2. The process to elaborate a new strategic plan give us the opportunity to stablish specific topics to work together. 3. Kennette2 https://lnkd.in/eK_943rX Abstract Institutions of higher education are increasingly diverse with more women and people of color hired, but there remains much work to be done to ensure that underrepresented faculty feel supported in their careers, evaluated fairly for tenure and/or promotion, and made to feel appreciated and valued in their institutions. This perspective paper will review how interpersonal and institutional prejudice disadvantage women of color in academia in aspects of their professional responsibilities including teaching, mentoring students, research, and service. The combination of these challenges explains why women of color are not rewarded in the same way and do not advance as quickly in their academic careers compared to white men. After considering the subtle and direct ways that biases cause harm to women of color, we present recommendations to better support women of color in faculty roles with the goal of combating prejudice pertaining to both racial/ethnic and gender biases.

Ethical and Social Challenges in the Algorithmic Fabric Estrategia Latino Americana de Inteligencia Artificial Session 294 Thursday, 30 May 2024 17:00–17:45 (UTC+02:00)  An Anthropological Perspective The Latin American Artificial Intelligence Strategy, ELA-IA, is an NGO with headquarters in Brazil and Chile, formed by academics and citizens interested in reflecting, debating, learning, developing, and co-creating solutions for the ethical and social challenges of the digital age. Its goal is to promote the ethical use of digital technologies through technological development, research, and education, focusing on protecting the personal data of individuals, communities, and collectives. It also aims to organize cooperative regional networks to encourage the sharing of studies, experiences, and advancements regarding AI ethics, considering Latin America's cultural and linguistic diversity. Currently, the organization is developing the concept of 'Digital Hermeneutic Justice' in line with developments in the growing field of Cognitive Justice and its applications in critical social epistemology and political philosophy. Looking beyond 2025, ELA-IA sees digital ethics and AI's ethical, explainable, and responsible development as essential to guiding the use of ICTs for development. By integrating these principles into policy frameworks, technical standards, and institutional practices, the review of WSIS+20 can help shape a digital future that promotes human well-being, equity, and inclusion, upholding the values enshrined in the SDGs. Without ethics, technology only exacerbates problems such as inequality, poverty, and environmental destruction. In its presentation, ELA-IA will focus the debate on the anthropological dimension: we often talk about 'users,' but who exactly are they? Are they just individuals of any age, as young as a 2-year-old, whose attention is to be captured to fuel an algorithmic process, essentially reducing them to data-generating entities rather than recognizing they are biological, social, and cultural human beings? It's a concerning issue: we're digitizing human beings, not humanizing technology and digital tools. As a result, the information society may be heading contrary to the Sustainable Development Goals. Join us in reflecting on the Ethical and Social Challenges in the Algorithmic Fabric from a necessary anthropological perspective.

The latest edition of #GlobalEducationForum ‘#EducAItion. Shaping the future, keeping us human', has brought together for two days more than 2,000 participants and 185 speakers from over 30 countries in 36 panels to discuss the transformative role of #IA in education at the Universidad Camilo José Cela 🤖.   During the first day’s sessions we had researchers, professors and experts from institutions such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Ashesi University, Western University, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the #UCJC, and companies such as Microsoft, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Design for Change, Telefónica, Vodafone, Ashoka, World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), Fundación CYD, Times Higher Education, CaixaBank, Federation for European Education, Arrowsmith Program or Deloitte 👏🏽.   Following the opening of the event by Nieves Segovia, president of SEK Education Group, Carme Artigas, Marc Rotenberg, Charles Fadel or George Siemens, debated on the irruption of this technology, its coexistence with the human being and its applications in the educational sector (please tag).   On the second day, 400 teachers from SEK Education Group participated in sessions to learn and provide input on how to effectively and safely use AI in the classroom, as it will be implemented in 100% of #UCJC degree subjects from September 🚀.   Students also expressed their concerns and demand an educational model focused on them, with comprehensive digitalisation and international collaboration.   #ArtificialIntelligence has played a key role in the proposal and definition of the topics and speakers of #GEFMadrid2024 and has participated in all sessions and round tables as one more, with physical representation through a hologram, Emily. It is the first co-pilot of its kind created in the field of education worldwide, which has been fed for a month with hundreds of information, reviews and scientific articles. Today's case study from BEI's #EducationReport explores #SystemsStrengthening in #Peru. Gleeds case study, titled 'BICENTENNIAL SCHOOLS - PROYECTO ESPECIAL DE INVERSION PUBLICA - ESCUELAS BICENTENARIO (PEIP – EB),' explores The PEIP-EB Programme. The Programme will reduce the significant #EducationalInfrastructure gap in Peru through the construction of 75 schools across 21 districts of Metropolitan Lima and nine regions in the rest of the country. By March 2024, the first four permanent schools were completed and all 119 temporary school sites also completed and in operation. A further 27 permanent schools will complete in 2024 with the remainder in 2025. The average procurement time for the nine packages was achieved in 4.5 months with an average delivery time of 20 months.
