Passenger dies after fleeing traffic stop in Watertown

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The passenger of a vehicle that was stopped in Watertown suffered a medical emergency after fleeing on foot and later died.

On Monday, Watertown Police Department officers conducted a routine vehicle stop on the 600 block of Water Street around 7:19 p.m.

The vehicle's passenger fled on foot and was subsequently detained after a brief foot chase. Shortly after, they appeared to have a medical issue while returning to the patrol car.

The subject was transported to SMC by ambulance for treatment and later pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown.

The NYS Attorney General’s Office and NYS State Police are investigating the matter.
