New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang visited Syracuse Tuesday. Lang took office in 2021 and works to keep government in check, receiving and investigating complaints of corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest, and abuse in New York State government, its employees, and those who work with the state. Lang's office also maintains the integrity of New York State’s public assistance programs and investigates violations of the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the workers’ compensation system.

"There are inspectors general across the world who are doing the hard work of overseeing government and making sure that there are processes in place to maintain government integrity and that when government officials violate it that there's accountability," said Lang.

Lang also takes a focus on transparency during her tenure, undertaking an initiative that includes publishing all records and letters, as well as releasing historical information that was previously closed off. Lang also expressed the need for humanity within government.

"When you respond to a crime scene and see a person bleeding on the pavement, you are acutely aware of how much government needs to bring compassion to its work to ensure its citizens get the support they need in times of vulnerability," said Lang. "I hope that we will continue to prioritize a focus on the agencies that serve and support the most vulnerable New Yorkers and that New Yorkers will see us as a resource."
