Impressive, coffee maker

Impressive, coffee maker
We’ve had quite the run with this coffee maker. In the attached video, I was attempting to review my 1st cup of brewed coffee, and at the very end, while I was trying to pour the coffee out of the carafe the handle slipped off the pot that was full and almost caused a messy disaster. Up to that point I was very impressed at how elegant this coffee maker looked and how unique it worked. You pour fresh coffee beans in the top, which has an airtight seal, and as you need coffee, it pulls the beans down, grinds them and gives you fresh coffee. The machine allows you to choose from a certain size cup to multiple size carafes. What I had noticed is that the manufacturer had failed to provide the appropriate tightening screws for the handle, and therefore it fell off at my first use. I made multiple attempts to communicate with the manufacture, but they did not respond. I was relieved that Amazon allowed me to return And get a replacement without any hassle. It makes great tasting coffee and looks really cool in our kitchen so it was worth another try. I’m disappointed in the manufactures inability to respond but I do appreciate their product. The fact that they forgot a couple of screws wasn’t a big deal as I’m sure it happens from time to time. All in all, we’re happy with the coffee maker, but I did deduct a star because of the lack of response from the manufacture.

This is a all class machine, from the look to the machine itself. Makes a great cup of java also!
The grind and brew option is so nice and the grinder is quite well made. So easy to clean, twist to the left and pull out, I have a small hand vacuum I use just for coffee grinders, wipe it with a clean cloth, put it back in, turn to the right to lock and done!
The basket does not need any filters and if it's messy it's because the user did not push it all the way in place! Have yet to see the mess other reviewers had, follow the instructions!...
So many different adjustments to personalize to get your perfect cup! Everything from the temperature, grind size, bloom time, strength of coffee and how much to make, from 1 cup to 10.
You can make 1 cup at a time if you desire! Can set up a schedule if need be and it even works with the WIFI.
Well designed, well made and looks very nice on the counter!
You will love this machine, I do.

I could tell you about the positives of the machine (it's attractive, coffee brewed on the "gold" setting is delicious, et.). However there is a design flaw that leads to leaking, and this is a fatal flaw in that you're most likely not going to want to keep this coffee maker. Let me explain.

As other reviewers have noted, the screw-on water filter housing is very finnicky. It's an acrylic piece that screws onto the bottom of the acrylic water reservoir. You can't just screw it on and call it good. It has to be screwed on PERFECTLY, or it will leak. The only way to tell if it's on right is to either fill it with water and leave it sit for a few hours to see if there's a leak, or to look very closely at the black rubber gasket through the clear acrylic. This gasket needs to be perfectly seated, and if the piece isn't screwed on right, you can often see it by looking at the gasket very carefully--you'll see one side of the gasket is popped out of the recess where it's supposed to sit. Even if it looks right, I'd still recommend filling the reservoir with water and leaving it to sit on a towel on the counter for a few hours to make sure it doesn't leak.

The problem is that even once you get the reservoir put together perfectly to where it doesn't leak sitting on the counter, it WILL leak once you put it in the machine. The reason for this is very simple, and it's due to a glaring design flaw you can see for yourself with careful study.

The housing for the water filter has a small spring-loaded piece in the bottom center with a rubber gasket. When you put the water reservoir into its holder on the machine, this piece rests on the water intake, which pushes the spring-loaded stopper up, so water can flow/trickle out of the reservoir and be pulled into the machine. The deign flaw is that where these two pieces connect--the bottom of the water reservoir filter and the top of the water intake--is just two pieces of hard plastic resting together. There is no seal or gasket here, so no matter what you do, it's going to leak, because there's no water-tight seal to prevent it.

This is why, when you take the water reservoir out, there is often water pooled in the holder on the machine.

It's also why, if you fill the reservoir with water the night before, to brew in the morning with a timer, or via the app, you'll get a low water warning and find a puddle of water on your counter around the coffee maker. The more you fill the reservoir, the more and faster it leaks (e.g. it will leak more with 10 cups of water than with 4).

I suspect the reason why there are good reviews for this coffee maker is people don't realize it's leaking. The leak is very slow, so you may only notice it if you use the timer function, or fill the water reservoir ahead of time. If you fill the water right before you make the coffee, you may not see or notice the leak, though you may still notice standing water in the reservoir holder on the machine.

So if you do buy this machine (which you really shouldn't), I highly recommend that you fill the water reservoir and leave it on the counter for a few hours to make sure you've got the filer housing screwed on right. Then, if there's no leaking, fill it and leave it on the machine overnight and see if you're greeted by a puddle on your counter in the morning.

It's possible that some units do have some kind of seal there, and I and others with this problem got units that are lacking this seal for some reason. Or (more likely, I think) they all have this flaw and some people are just not noticing. The worst thing about this, I think, is you may have the unit for a while before you do a timed brew, and so you don't find out about the leaking until the return window is closed.

Packing this all up and sending it back for a refund was a hassle. There is either a design flaw in all these machines, or their quality control is so bad that some of the machines are lacking a crucial seal. Either way, your money can be better spent on a better brand. I ended up getting a separate coffee maker and grinder, both by Breville, and the build quality on those is much higher with no problems and no leaking.

Firstly, we have recently redone our kitchen and used all GE Cafe appliances, so when looking for a new coffee maker to buy, this was top of the list. It connects to the GE "Smart HQ" app, where you can do some very cool stuff, like set up favorite settings for a one button brew, control strength, temp and ounces, and schedule brew times. And of course, you can order GE replacement filters directly from the app if you're not using the brass filters. There is also a descale alert so you know when to run that procedure to keep the coffee maker in tip top shape.

I want to immediately point out one thing that may be important for your purchase if you have limited space. The holder for the brew basket swings out to the right, it's not removable, so you need to make sure you've got clearance for that. You cannot put the right side of the coffee maker against a wall.

As far as the coffee produced goes, it's really good. There really is nothing like freshly ground and brewed coffee. Because the appliance comes with brass filters (a small one for single cup and large one for carafe), none of the oils get absorbed and all make it into the cup. That leads to a very smooth and full flavored coffee. Compared to a capsule based coffee maker, where the coffee tends to be bitter because they typically use a higher temp, this coffee is amazing. And I don't feel guilty because I'm producing minimal waste (no filter to toss, no plastic cartridge that ends up in the trash)

With the scheduling, you can wake up to fresh ground and brewed coffee, which can't be beat, although I recommend using the carafe or an insulated mug (a tall one, see below), otherwise the coffee gets cold if you get up late.

There are few things that detract from the appliance, hence the 4 stars. First and foremost, none of the things that get dirty, like carafe, filter basket, etc, can go in the dishwasher, not even the top rack. That is so sad, because nobody wants a sink full of handwashing. If you don't have a dishwasher, then add a half star back to this review :-)

The other thing that detracts is the single cup brew. The filter basket ends up being pretty far from a normally sized mug, so when the coffee flows into the mug, it will splash and make a little bit of mess. This can be fixed by either raising the cup somehow by placing items under it, or using a tall mug, like a yeti-style insulated one. Also (and this isn't really specific to this maker), the valve setting in the filter basket for single cup brew allows coffee to continue to drip after the cup is removed. When used with the carafe, it will open a valve when the carafe is inserted, and close that valve when removed, so no dripping. This obviously can't be done with a coffee cup, so, you get the drips. There is a little tray in the base to catch those drips, but it is not removable. In my opinion, GE should have made the drip tray removable for easier cleaning, since you will get drips in there if you use the single cup mode. This is where the other half star went in this review.

Overall, I highly recommend this coffee maker, especially if you're already using the Smart HQ app and have other GE Cafe appliances. The convenience, flavor, and beauty can't be beat!

Ditching my bulky super-automatic for the Café Specialty Grind and Brew was a revelation! This sleek machine boasts top-notch build quality and a space-saving design that looks stunning on my countertop. No more leaky mornings either – the carafe and water tank have been flawless for a month now. But the real magic lies within: the integrated grinder delivers the freshest coffee, the single-serve option caters to solo cravings, and the thermal carafe keeps my brew piping hot for hours. Plus, WiFi connectivity makes remote brewing so much easier. I'm able to start my coffee while in bed, so by the time I come downstairs its ready to go! This machine does it all, without the fuss. If you're looking for a luxurious coffee experience that saves space and time, look no further!
