Rusted in 7 Months & That's The Least of My Problems
1 out of 5 stars
Rusted in 7 Months & That's The Least of My Problems
in the seven months that I’ve owned this, Weber has had to replace two of the controllers. I cannot get it to evenly heat no matter how perfectly level my patio may be. If you set it to 275, my left side of the grill is barely 200, center is at 300 and the right is at 275, not ideal for large BBQ’s. The last straw for me which is why I will be selling this Smokefire at a loss, the lid is already rusting and enamel is peeling off. I contacted Weber and they won’t even honor their warranty because apparently peeling enamel and rust are “minor” issues. Looking forward to my next pellet grill that will replace this Weber. I think the company has gone downhill since going public. I’ve spent thousands over the years on Weber products and this Smokefire is a massively steep decline in what was once a great American company. None of my other grills have rust even after a decade, but this Smokefire rusted almost immediately. If they are not willing to replace rusted parts, it tells me that this must be a very common issue that they cannot afford to replace. Shame on Weber.Update: The rust got so bad that I could finally get Weber to have the grill repaired. They send out someone to perform the repair and they leave without ever testing the grill. Two nights ago I ran the shutdown setting and was alerted within 15 minutes that the grill was safe to power down. I look at it again two hours later and it's stuck running the shutdown and burning through my pellets.Fast forward to today, I was running this for a few hours to smoke BBQ for the 4th of July. I check my temps and it dropped from 250 down to 150 within 10 minutes. I go out to check and the hot end is not heating up to burn the wood. So I completely unload the smoker, disassemble to get to the hot end and I discover that replacing the hot end does not fix the issue. I proceeded to work on it for about an hour as my food has since spoiled as it was in the danger zone of 40-140 when the incident occurred. After an hour of looking, I discover they must have shorted out the wiring for my hot end when reassembling my grill as the hot end will only run when held at a certain angle....At this point, I wake up every morning that I BBQ, look hard and long in the mirror and ask myself why I ever decided to buy this thing when reviews like mine existed when I was in the market for a pellet smoker. "It will get better!" I convinced myself. Don't be like me. Run. Run and don't look back. This is not the Weber I grew to love (owned more Weber products than I care to admit) and this is not the grill you are looking for. If you want a decent pellet smoker, I will not name another brand but there are two or three respectable manufacturers where these issues seemingly don't exist. If I can get another two years worth of use out of this Smokefire I'll consider it a miracle and at that point I'm recycling it, calling it good enough and buying one of those other brands. It's been THAT bad.

BLUF:
Great machine. Food tastes amazing with insane smoke rings. Some minor improvements can be made to the software. High-temp cooks aren't noticeably better than propane. Keep it clean between each cook to minimize grease fires (tool included). I highly recommend Weber's pellets for maximum flavor and performance.

Full Review:
After years of research, I took the plunge with the Smokefire. I wisely waited until the 2.0 model was released. Weber has fixed the issues of the first generation.

My experience includes years with multiple weber gas grills. I've also used a Charbroil Kamado egg grill and a Masterbuilt electric smoker.

I have used this grill to low-and-slow cook and to high-heat cook. I've done both in back-to-back sessions with great success. I've had a few minor grease fires, but nothing extreme or honestly unexpected. I experience grease fires in my gas grills as well. In all cases, the fires burned out fairly quickly and without inputs on my part. All of them occurred when executing high-temp cooks.

I clean my smoker before each and every cook. I find that minimizes the chances of grease fires. It makes using the grill a little more labor intensive, but I find the product is worth the time spend caring for the equipment.

I empty the hopper after each cook to keep the pellets dry. This isn't as clean of an emptying as I would have hoped. Some pellets remain in the grill (right in the top of hopper chute). I'm in a hot and humid environment, and I really wish I could fully empty the hopper after each cook to keep the chance of clogging (pellets absorbing water and disintegrating) to a minimum. Thus far, I've not experienced issues, though. When you go to empty the hopper, be ready for pellets to go flying. Weber could make a minor improvement by extending the chute down below the slide to help direct pellets straight down into whatever collection device you use. I placed an outdoor rug under the smoker to help keep the pellets from collecting between my deck boards. This makes it easier to sweep up the pellets that fall out as I empty the hopper.

One note about the hopper, I do still see cavitation of pellets. So I still keep an eye out and stir the hopper with my hand from time to time. I don't mind this. I like to baby my cooks anyways (spritzing hourly during the cooks). Just one more thing to check as I check in on the meat.

For my every day cooks, I continue to use my weber gas grill. I honestly don't find value in using the Smokefire for high-temp cooks, not like I expected. When searing meat, BTU is BTU in my opinion. I don't honestly believe the meat is on the grill long enough to accumulate enough smoke flavor from the wood. The cost of using the pellets is more than burning the propane, so I will carry on with propane for my burgers, steaks, seared chicken, etc.

As a smoker, this grille is unbelievable. I've cooked ribs and pork butts thus far. The ribs are tender, juicy, and full of smoke flavor. The smoke ring this machine produces is insane! I cannot help but laugh with joy each time I look at the final product.

I have strictly used Weber's pellets. I've used both the grillmaster blend as well as the hickory blend. These pellets can be hard to find at decent prices, but I've found the flavor and performance is second to none with these pellets. I also use weber's fuel bags to hold the pellets, and these also perform brilliantly.

I added both the left side table as well as the front tables to give me maximum table space around the grill. I've already leaned on all of the secondary tables to rest utensils, gloves, trays, etc. The maximum space really makes it easy to focus on the work and keep everything I need close at hand each time I go to the grill. The tables are all easy to install, sturdy, and function perfectly for my needs. They clean up easily.

From the software perspective, I enjoy the Weber Connect app. There are a few drawbacks with the app, but overall I like the software and control. Smokeboost is an amazing feature that's fantastic to use at the beginning of your cooks. It's easy to activate and deactivate.

I use timers and temperature alarms for my cooks. The timers are easy to set, but I do wish there was a way to label them. I often set multiple timers at the outset of the cook. As the timers wind down, it can be difficult to remember which is which with just a glance. Color code? Label with a name? These changes could improve the experience. One other item to keep aware of, timers stop when you turn off the Smokefire. This won't affect most folks, but it does impact me. To save on fuel, when I wrap the different meats, I move them into my electric smoker. BTU is BTU once wrapped, and electricity is cheaper than pellets. It would be nice if the Weber Connect app could keep timers running all in one central location even when the grill is shut down. As it stands today, I have to transition my timers to other applications before I shut down the grill.

The temperature probes work fantastically well. I've used the two that come with the smoker. The software immediately recognizes each probe once connected. Overall, a solid experience. Again, I love seeing the probe temps mixed in with my timers and alarms. One place to view all of the grill data is fantastic. As with the timers, I'd love to be able to color code or label the probes to help me remember which piece of meat is attached to which probe. Small nit to pick.

Other items I've observed. The casters work great for me. no complaints. The other hardware is solid. I love the flavorizer bars and grates. Loads of space. I love the controls on the grill itself. I split my usage between the app and the control panel. Both work great. The grease and ash trays work exactly as advertised. The cleaning spatula that comes with the grill is a great tool to use to keep the inside cleaned out. Again, I recommend cleaning between each cook just to minimize grease fires and help keep the grill functioning well for the long term. No issues with the glow plug or jamming of the auger.

This is an expensive piece of kit, but if you love smoked food and you love weber's quality and functionality, you'll really enjoy this grill.

Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021
Style: GrillVerified Purchase
The Weber Smokefire EX6 has it's quirks and gen2 did not solve all of them but knowing your grill makes up for them and is not a major concern for me. The first quirk that gen2 tried to eliminate was the pellet box ramp. The slope was increased by a new insert. It doesn't eliminate the problem of a vortex happening with pellets not sliding down that would create pellets not reaching the auger. For me lifting the lid every several hours and pushing the pellets towards the auger end is no big deal. I think if someone wanted to smoke meat for 10 or twelve hours would find a flame out but for me I'm not going to be away from the Weber long enough to matter. Reviews complain of the controller but for me it has been flawless, holds temperature and from updating first use to wifi connect has been perfect. I think one main factor to consider is having a strong wifi signal even if it means installing a wifi extender. I learned that with my garage door wifi reliably working. Another quirk for some has been grease build up along with ashes causing grease not to drain down the slots into the grease trap. After loading the grill completely with meat top to bottom and lots of grease I have not experienced this. But I do have some aluminum disposable catch pans if I feel the need to ever use them. The front and side table can be purchased separately but for me my folding table has mush more room than a tiny front and side one so I am glad I didn't pay for those. One thing for sure the grill puts out more smoke for meat smokiness than most pellet grills. I like that fact. I love the porcelain coating for rust protection. As long as it's not deep scratched it will last years and years. I was disappointed in the chrome plated racks. I chose to replace with stainless steel racks on the bottom of the same three piece size with two sets of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0823BGYRG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Two sets leave one rack for a spare for only $80. $100 cheaper than the Weber 7012 stainless grates. The important thing is to clean the inside of grill after each use. Doing that has made it run well for me. Assembly was easy enough but more picture instruction than words. One point is the flavorizer support brackets need to snap down into two back/front supports. Another is that back bracket center needs to go behind the pellet shoot. Other than that no complaints on assembly. I'm loving my Weber.

Worst investment you could make in what's supposed to be a weber quality product. My 1 yr old weber woodfire sits next to my 15 yr old weber summit. The summit is never covered anymore and has rust issues in the cabinet portion........ after OVER 15 years. I get that and that grill has lasted famously. The grates are perfect without so much as any surface rust on them and each one could easily hold 100lbs. Super sturdy.
On my 1 yr old woodfire...... the weber folding shelves are flimsy garbage, the weber handle lights hit the shelf when it's up or down unless you flip them around every time you open the grill lid which also renders the auto off feature useless, I have half a dozen internal parts either heavily rusted or already have holes rusted all the way through them, the hopper still doesn't always feed correctly even with their higher angled insert in this gen 2, the heat dispersion isn't even unless you put sheet pans on top of the flavorizer bars, the grease trap is useless to the point that zero grease ever actually makes it in there..... only ash and that's only if you push it in there yourself after every cook......... and all this is happening with a grill.under a covered patio that is also covered with a weber cover most days it's not in use...... in a household of only 2 ppl. Seriously Weber your engineers making products crappy so we have to buy them again on the near future should not be happening with grills that are well over $1000. I've got almost $2k in the grill and weber accessories and I'm ready to trash every weber product I have and start over with a company that actually makes a quality product. Weber is theives and liars out to steal your money, not stand behind their products, and leave you with your $2k grill as an inoperable porch decoration within 1 year of purchase.

Love the Smokefire. I like being able to do low and slow then crank it to get the fire going.

You do you have to be careful with it because you can start a grease fire as it doesn’t have the large deflector plate to separate the meat from the flame. But in turn the design allows for smoke to come underneath the meat. Great flavour and ease of use compared to my old pellet grill.
