The dazzling debut cookbook from Joanne Lee Molinaro, the home cook and spellbinding storyteller behind the online sensation @thekoreanvegan

Joanne Lee Molinaro has captivated millions of fans with her powerfully moving personal tales of love, family, and food. In her debut cookbook, she shares a collection of her favorite Korean dishes, some traditional and some reimagined, as well as poignant narrative snapshots that have shaped her family history.

As Joanne reveals, she’s often asked, “How can you be vegan
and Korean?” Korean cooking is, after all, synonymous with fish sauce and barbecue. And although grilled meat is indeed prevalent in some Korean food, the ingredients that filled out bapsangs on Joanne’s table growing up—doenjang (fermented soybean paste), gochujang (chili sauce), dashima (seaweed), and more—are fully plant-based, unbelievably flavorful, and totally Korean. Some of the recipes come straight from her childhood: Jjajangmyun, the rich Korean-Chinese black bean noodles she ate on birthdays, or the humble Gamja Guk, a potato-and-leek soup her father makes. Some pay homage: Chocolate Sweet Potato Cake is an ode to the two foods that saved her mother’s life after she fled North Korea.

The Korean Vegan Cookbook is a rich portrait of the immigrant experience with life lessons that are universal. It celebrates how deeply food and the ones we love shape our identity.

A gorgeous book you won’t regret buying!
I love this cookbook and have made so many recipes from it. It’s inspired me to up my vegan cooking game.I use it so much that I have the audible version, the kindle version for quick access and the hardcover copy.I’ve currently made many of the recipes and have enjoyed learning about the family history alongside the recipes. There is even a pecan pie that’s amazing called Paht Pie that is made with red bean paste. I’m perfecting my sujebi game and am much more in tune with food oriented K-dramas when various ingredients or dishes are featured. It’s a lot of fun!Buy this book, the real one (not the ripped-off scam copy bring sold around) and you won’t regret it. My first attempt at her recipe for pies in my review photo.

I am a strange person who actually reads cookbooks. I don't just flip to a page and do a recipe (well, sometimes I do); instead, I actually read the book from cover to cover. Within the first couple of paragraphs I was completely immersed, and I did not want to put the book down. I found myself weeping and giggling and cringing at various moments of this deeply moving book. Indeed, I typically read cookbooks, but I am not typically changed by them. This book is beautiful, engaging, thought provoking, and more. Oh yeah, and there are some damn good recipes in there, too. Joanne, thanks for this amazing work of art and history!

If you love Korean food and are looking for a vegan option, this is a great book of recipes.
I have tried several of the kimchi recipes, and highly recommend them, they are easy to follow, and the ingredient list with suggestions is so helpful. The "fishy sauce' recipe is a game changer for the fermentation process in the various kimchi recipes.
A bonus that I loved with this cookbook is, the author Joanne, makes the recipes personal by sharing food recipes with stories of her family and memories of dishes and how meaningful they are to her.
Looking forward to other cookbooks.

I am writing this review not just as someone who is an avid cook, eats vegan, and is Korean. I think from the perspective of Korean cuisine I was expecting a completely fresh and innovative take on Korean cuisine. Instead, this is a book on mostly Korean classics sans the meat, fish, or eggs. Honestly there are already a lot of vegan-friendly dishes in Korean cuisine so the recipes were not really a stretch at all. I didn't find it creative or innovative in any way. I found a lot of the bread and dessert recipes irrelevant to Korean cuisine. The dolsot bbang is kind of a cute idea but it's basically a regular rustic bread (instead of baked in a dutch oven) baked in the dolsot pot... not really a clever stretch. I think it's because Koreans like to normally add Korean ingredients or elements pretty regularly when cooking other cuisines so the pasta dish didn't seem like a revelation at all. I didn't know what this cookbook was trying to be--traditional or fusion/modern. Maybe it was the way the book was organized. Honestly, many of the dressings and flavorings are ordinary stuff that Koreans use everyday in their kitchen. There were also missed opportunities for interesting kimchis, muchims, and other dishes that she could have created. However, this book I think might be exciting for someone who isn't as familiar with Korean food.
That all being said, the recipes are solid and I like that they're fairly simple for the most part. You should end of up with pretty good food in the end.

I bought this cookbook because Joanne was a speaker at our Company webinar. She did a great cooking demo while speaking about her background & sharing wonderful stories. Then I followed her on Instagram & she posts a lot of mouth-watering recipes while providing more interesting & encouraging stories. So then I found her cookbook & bought it for a gift. My gift recipient loved it & made several recipes. I'm not a vegan, but I also have to say her recipes are very delicious! I had her black bean noodles, which is one of my favorite dishes. It was so good & very clean & satisfying. I hope to try more of the recipes. Just have to hound my friend....(**I'm not a cook...but maybe I can try**)

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more than a cookbook
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2023
One of the best selling cookbooks, and it is easy to see why.

I absolutely love Joanne Molinaro's calm, wise, generous style. I also love the personal content she puts in along with the ingredients. It comes through in all her YouTube clips (which add another dimension to this book, and are really worth watching), and it comes through in every one of her printed recipes here, whether traditional or fusion.

This isn't just a wonderful cookbook for vegans, it suggests new ways of preparing food for vegetarians and carnivores alike. She offers a flexible, sensible cuisine that produces truly delicious, nutritious meals.

Highly recommended to all foodies.

I didn't give 5 stars mainly because of the American measurements that are a pain to convert sometimes.
The book is amazing, lovely stories behind the food and recipes, but mostly the recipes are easy to follow and yummie!
