Tanorria Askew is the owner of Tanorria’s Table, a personal chef company in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tanorria was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and her cooking roots are based on Southern family tradition. In 2016, Tanorria ended her 15-year career in banking and learning and development to pursue her dream in empowering people through food. She was crowned fourth best cook in America on Masterchef Season 7, hosted by Gordon Ramsay.

Tanorria continues to build her business through virtual cooking classes, dinner parties and racial justice activism, You can find her dancing to Beyoncé in her flour-covered kitchen or relaxing with her partner, Johntay, and their three dogs, Zoey, Zion and Reeko.

This book is so easy to follow and I’ve already marked many pages to try in 2022. So far I’ve made the ranch dressing and tasted the sweet potato squares and fried okra. I have a Ree Drummond cookbook. I love me some Pioneer Woman. But I was just flipping through her cookbook and it was...too much. Too decadent, too many ingredients, too much time, too much effort. So all in all, there are probably only a few recipes I would actually make out of the whole big, beautiful book.

Contrast that to Tanorria's spectacular cookbook. I feel like a kid in a candy store bookmarking all the recipes I can't wait to make! Tanorria does a masterful job of striking a balance between elegant and easy. All of her recipes are elevated and delicious but not out of reach for anyone to make.

All the recipes are photographed beautifully and Tanorria's personality and cooking style really shines through.

Honestly this might be one of my most favorite cookbooks ever. She just speaks to my cooking style and I think many others will also feel similarly. Love, love, love it and you will too!

I love, love, love, love, love, this cookbook! It is now an indispensable part of my cookbook collection, similar to the Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook I own. With a flavorful twist on tried and true recipes, the true test is feeding them to my finicky 14 yo daughter who rarely likes to try anything outside of microwaveable or Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner. The best thing is, I don’t have to go out of my way to find ingredients at some specialty market for something I will make one time and not even sure if I will like it! So far I have made three recipes all with a glowing teen review:
Crispy Oven Baked Wings -my daughter won’t have them any other way now!
Cast Iron Seared Steak - Steak is one of our faves and with this recipe, I feel like I can get it right!
Southern Fried Corn - one of my faves. I haven’t had it home cooked since my mother’s and the flavor profile of Tanorria’s is very close.
So Godly proud of this endeavor and She will always have my support! Thanks for such a wonderful vision executed for our tastebuds!

Almost everyone keeps ingredients they use on hand in their pantry. Tanorria Askew takes advantage of these staples and shows readers how to do it at home in her cookbook, Staples + 5: 100 Simple Recipes to Make the Most of Your Pantry. The recipes in this cookbook make good use of the staples most of us keep on hand – she lists 35 ingredients that should be on your pantry shelves and some others that are nice to have (I was pleasantly surprised to find that I have everything in my kitchen from both lists). The ingredients are ordinary things such as flour, sugar, spices, potatoes, onions, etc., so it isn’t difficult to find them in any mainstream grocery store. Then Askew presents recipes using those staples as well as up to five other ingredients to create delicious dishes that almost everyone will love. The recipes have mostly southern roots with a bit of the Midwest thrown in, and there are some unique ideas for those who are tired of same old-same old boring meals.

Askew’s cute personality comes through in the chapters and in her notes prefacing each recipe, making this a fun cookbook to peruse as well as a fun cookbook to cook from. There are beautiful photographs of some of the dishes; the only negative to this book is that there aren’t enough. There are several recipes that should have been photographed so that cooks can see what the finished product should look like. Nevertheless, this is a good cookbook; it is well organized and the recipes are written in the traditional form so they are easy to follow. The ingredients are easy to find and it’s nice to know that most of them are already in the pantry waiting to be used.

If you are a cookbook collector or just like unique cookbooks, you’ll want to pick up this book.

I love the concept of this cookbook! It seems like I never have even half the ingredients called for in most cookbooks/recipes I want to make but since every recipe is literally built around Tanorria’s pantry staples, I know I have what I need as long as I keep my pantry stocked according to her list - which it already is! I also love the stories she has written about each recipe. Her love of cooking and humor shines through. Not to mention the flavor she cooks with is AMAZING and the recipes I’ve made so far have been a flavor explosion party in my mouth. Highly recommend!!!!

Staples +5 is a cooking lesson in a book. This cookbook has 100 amazing recipes using everyday pantry ingredients.

Chef Tanorria Askew has added awesome instructions and wonderful tools to help every level cook make delicious meals with ease.
