About the Author

Chetna Makan was born in Jabalpur, an ancient city in central India. She has a degree in fashion and worked in Mumbai as a fashion designer before moving to the UK in 2003. Chetna reached the semi-final of The Great British Bake Off in 2014, and her first book, The Cardamom Trail, is a celebration of baking with Indian flavors. She has a very popular YouTube channel 'Food with Chetna' where she shares her creative flair for food. Her other books, also published by Mitchell Beazley, include Chai, Chaat & Chutney,Chetna's Healthy Indian, and Chetna's Healthy Indian Vegetarian.

Not being Indian, I realize I am not going to know some of the terms. That being said, even Kindle search couldn’t help me half the time. Expect to do Google searches.
Not enough photos and the photos provided don’t really illustrate the dish. So I wouldn’t have a clue what I was making with some of the recipes.
Some ingredients are too vague like dried red chiles or green chiles. What kind? Chiles vary greatly by region so maybe a chapter dedicated to ingredients would have helped.
Way too many things are fried and air frying would probably not be an option. Not every recipe is healthy so be aware of that.

On the good side, she doesn’t rely on spice blends. A recipe may look daunting with the list of herbs and spices but if you make spice blends from the recipes, you can be very creative.

Secondly, she relies on fresh ingredients. She might use a few canned items but not much if any processed food. Big plus for me.

She also recommends accompaniments like breads, dips, chutneys or side dishes.

If you are creative, know how to substitute and don’t mind doing a google search, this could be a fun cook book.
