A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Now a series on Amazon Freevee

The “buoyant and brainy Mexican cooking authority” (New York Times) and star of the three-time James Beard Award-winning PBS series Pati’s Mexican Table brings together more than 150 iconic dishes that define the country’s cuisine

Although many of us can rattle off our favorite authentic Mexican dishes, we might be hard pressed to name more than ten. Which is preposterous, given that Mexico has a rich culinary history stretching back thousands of years. For the last decade, Pati Jinich has sought out the culinary treasures of her home country, from birria, to salsa macha, to coyotas, to carne asada.

Many of these dishes are local specialties, heirlooms passed down through generations, unknown outside of their original regions. Others have become national sensations. Each recipe is a classic. Each one comes with a story told in Pati's warm, relatable style. And each has been tested in Pati's American kitchen to ensure it is the best of its kind. Together, these essential recipes paint a vivid picture of the richness of Mexico.

A self-described "overloaded soccer mom with three kids and a powerful blender," Pati Jinich is on a mission to show the world that true home Mexican cooking isn't what they've come to expect. Pati was born and raised in Mexico City and comes from a family of accomplished cooks. She has resided in the Washington, DC, area for the past 20 years, where she and her husband are raising their three boys.

Pati didn't set out to be a chef. As a child, Pati could be found reading and dreaming of becoming a writer. She was professionally trained as a policy analyst with a graduate degree from ITAM in Mexico City and later on at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. It was out of nostalgia for the foods she grew up eating in Mexico, and a few nudges from her husband, that she left her career as a policy analyst to pursue her passion for food.

In 2007, she launched an ongoing series of culinary programs comprised of informative talks, cooking demonstrations, and tasting dinners at the Mexican Cultural Institute, where she is the resident chef. Pati's success and popularity, both with event attendees and the media, transferred into a nationally aired PBS series, called "Pati's Mexican Table," which is currently on its 11th season. Through the show, she is able to familiarize a far broader audience with not only Mexican ingredients and cooking, but also with the many regional cultures, traditions and histories that, together, form Mexico's diverse and evolving cuisine both inside and outside of Mexico.

"Pati's Mexican Table" has received three James Beard Awards — for Best Culinary Television Program in 2020 and 2019, and for Outstanding Personality/TV Host in 2018. It also received a Gracie Award for On-Air Talent Lifestyle in 2020, an IACP Award for Culinary Television Series, and three Imagen Awards in 2020, 2018 and 2016. Additionally, the series has earned three Daytime Emmy nominations — Outstanding Culinary Host in 2019 and 2016, and Outstanding Culinary Series in 2016.

In October 2021, Pati made her PBS primetime debut with her two-part docuseries “La Frontera with Pati Jinich," which highlights the fascinating, yet misunderstood, US-Mexico border region where countries and cultures collide. "La Frontera" earned an M.F.K Fisher Prize in 2022, and Pati received a Gracie Award for her work as a producer on "La Frontera" in 2022.

Pati's most recent cookbook, "Treasures of the Mexican Table," was a New York Times bestseller and won a prestigious IACP Award for Best International Cookbook in 2022. It has more than 150 treasured recipes from Pati's travels throughout Mexico over the past decade. Many of these dishes are local specialties, heirlooms passed down through generations, unknown outside of their original regions. Others have become national sensations. Together, these essential recipes paint a vivid picture of the richness of Mexico.

Her first cookbook, "Pati's Mexican Table," brings wholesome, simple Mexican meals into the homes of families everywhere. She acts as a tour guide and interpreter, telling stories about her homeland's history, evolution, and rich culture, while also sharing her upbringing, travels, and conversations with cooks across both her native and adopted countries. Furthermore, as a mom of three growing boys, Pati intimately understands the thrills — and spills — of cooking everyday meals for picky eaters and offers the practical tips and advice she's acquired during her many years of cooking professionally.

In her second cookbook, entitled "Mexican Today," she shares easy, generous dishes, both traditional ones and her own new spins. Her food draws everyone together — a family at the end of a working day, a book club, or a neighborhood potluck. And throughout, she is an infectious cheerleader, sharing stories of the food, people, and places behind the recipe.

Fantastic Cookbook
I fell in love with Pati a few years ago while watching her on PBS. She has such a great personality along with a no-nonsense approach to cooking. I always felt like she was talking to me and me alone (warmth). So when I saw her new cookbook coming out I bought it, it's my first by the way.It arrived a few days later and the quality of the book is one aspect I love but the content...beyond expectation!!! It's so rich in history and a genuine love for her people through the expression of food. I now plan on buying all her cookbooks!!!!
Thank you for your feedback

#1 Spouse excitedly belted out coming in from the foyer, "The delivery you have been waiting for is here!". Me, like "What? Watcha talking a bout Suzie?" What seems like our daily Amazon delivery is always something for her. The package sat a day or so, until she finally dropped it on my lap and told me to open it. Ok, ok already.

Upon opening the box, there was a fabulous photo of Pati starring back at me. Yes! I had been waiting for the book, it's been a while since I ordered it. I wanted to purchase it to support her and naively thought since she was on PBS, perhaps this would help her career. I'm so ignorant. She was a star before she was on PBS. I just loved her programs, her family, her boys narfing down her wonderful concoctions. I enjoyed her travels, her total comfort being in front of the camera's and interaction with her guests and her travels. Sorry, move over Rick Bayless.... Pati's got your number. Anyhow...

The cookbook is glorious. Great photographs and it weighs a ton. Which is good. Such a wonderful array of different recipes, ingredients and "How To's" if you will. Step by Step and the why's. Why Roma Tomato's for instance? I truly thought there was only one Chipotle, nope. I usually might be a borracha, who knew I could actually make a salsa (Salsa Borracha) dedicated to enjoy my margarita while getting borracha'ed if you would. Sorry, that was crass, but on point. So many great recipes that we will enjoy time and again. Already replaced my roasted tomatillo recipe with her version. (Sorry Rick..)

The only downside, if this is even one, the recipes take some time and care. This is fine with me. It seems that cooking together, even tho it's just us, will blossom a relationship. Even tho my soon to be nicknamed, "4 fingers" spouse (due to some interesting knife skills), I relish the opportunity to cook with her. The colours of Mexico are perfectly represented in Pati's dishes. The recipes are easy to follow, well thought out and even this brit can figure it out. Although, like all cooks, being the "German Engineer", wife's nickname for me, would love to know what medium onion is in Texas. Weight's would be helpful, however, not necessary in the end. We can make some wonderful mistakes, a la Bob Ross.

Definitely add this to your collection.. heck even make one of the recipes. Pati's got some real skills here...

We're so impressed with Pati's latest undertaking. We're huge fans to begin with, but even if you're unfamiliar with her but love Mexican cuisine, this is a worthwhile addition for your library. It's gorgeous from cover to cover, and explores the wide variety of foods Mexico has to offer, from classic to the unconventional. We love the way the recipes are presented with a concise and to-the-point and the recipes are clear and easy to follow. Everything is presented in simple terms that even novice cooks will be able to understand and follow. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In this day and time I expect new cookbooks to have nutritional information. Since I'm diabetic I must pay attention to the values. Usually the lack of nutritionals would automatically mean "move along" BUT I may still buy this. The recipes for the various salsas and their explanations were very intriguing. However, the recipe that completely grabbed my attention was the Chile Rellenos.

I bought this after Pati's Mexican Table and it has added another dimension to my Mexican cooking. Recipes are clear and I have had little difficulty in sourcing the ingredients for them. A little more complex than the first book and I would recommend buying it before this one. These two books will give you a great insight into modern Mexican home cooking.
