Overall, I'm pleased with this Hoover carpet cleaner. We have several large area rugs in our newly built home that haven't been cleaned (only vacuumed) since we moved in 18 months ago. We were thinking about getting a professional rug cleaner to do the job, but saw that this carpet cleaner would cost less than a one time cleaning by a professional. The reviews were good so we decided to give it a try.
Unpacking and assembly was very easy. No tools required. The quick use guide was good if you're the kind of person that doesn't want to take the time to read the entire manual. The manual itself goes into just the right amount of detail to tell you everything you need to know.
The machine is very easy to use. Just put warm water into the tank up to the first fill line. Then add the cleaning formula up to the second fill line. The two fill lines take the guess work out of how much formula to use (as long as you're using the correct formula for the machine). Dumping the waste water is easy... just squeeze the handle on top, lift out, dump and reinsert. The machine is very light and easy to handle. It's a very easy machine to use.
As far as cleaning, the machine does a pretty good job cleaning my rugs. The waste water was a very dark brown, so it definitely sucked a lot of dirt out. Visually, it was apparent that our rugs looked much cleaner after cleaning them with this machine. So, I am pleased with the result. Especially considering that this machine only cost us $99.00. There were a few spots on our rugs the machine did not get up. So I used my Bissell spot cleaning machine to get those out. Some dirty spots just require a little more muscle and time. One cleaning note - the warm water, formula and scrubbing this machine does will definitely loosen the dirt. But if you rush going back over the carpet to suck out the dirty water, the results won't be as good. I found that a couple of extra passes over the carpet with just the suction on to suck out all the dirty water possible will bring better results.
Does this machine clean as well as a professional cleaning? Probably not, especially on deep rugs and carpet. But I don't believe there is much difference between the effectiveness of the two options. If you're willing to purchase this thing and do the work yourself as opposed to using a professional, you'll save a lot of money.
The question now is, "how long will this machine last"? Some of the reviews indicate it could die within a year or two. I guess it depends partly on how often you use it. But if I get two years out it, it will be worth the purchase.
What would I change about this little rug cleaner? First of all, I wish the electrical cord was longer, but it's not a big deal. Second, I wish the two tanks held more water. You have to empty the waste tank and refill the clean water tank often. To clean 5 large rugs and 4 smaller rugs in my home, I refilled the clean water tank a dozen times. I dumped the waster water tank 7 times. It's a bit aggravating to have to refill and dump so many items. But I guess it's a trade off to make the machine lighter and easier to handle.
I only found one problem with the machine. The machine is designed to stop vacuuming whenever the waste tank is full. There is a "full tank line" on the waste container. The problem is that the machine stops vacuuming before the "full tank line" is reached. It took me a little time to figure out what the heck was going on when it stopped vacuuming. Once you know it will stop vacuuming a little short of the line, it's not a big deal. But I want to mention it in case those reading this review experienced the same problem.
So, I do recommend this machine. It's does a nice job cleaning carpet and rugs. It will save you money if you're willing to do the work yourself.

Would purchase again, and DID!!!
My mother was looking for a light weight carpet cleaner to spot clean areas where my dad would pee. He has dementia and forgets where the bathroom is. She had a larger carpet cleaner from the company that starts with a B, but it NEVER worked. I found this little gem and thought we'd try it. It was assembled in two clicks. The quick use card was easy to follow. It is AMAZING FOR SPOT CLEANING. There is no leaking, you can see when the suction is done, and it is SIMPLE to fill and empty. If you have an elderly pet, or parent, who has messes in the house- GET THIS NOW! I returned to my home and immediately bought one. The picture is from the spot in front of my favorite chair that, clearly, was dirty! I am telling everyone I know to purchase this!

Functions really well to clean carpet. It’s compact, which I like. It’s light weight and more manageable than my previous one, which was huge and bulky. There are pros and cons to the size: I cleaned a large room and ended up filling the reservoir 3 times total, the initial fill-up plus two refills. Since I was refilling it, I went ahead and drained the dirty tank simultaneously. I had vacuumed my carpet twice, really well prior to shampooing the carpet. After using the cleaner, I was very impressed. Does well picking up all kinds of junk and globs of pet hair imbedded in the carpet. Great job! Now on to the users manual: it DOES NOT MATCH THE PRODUCT. It’s the wrong manual. Since I was using the machine for the first time, I followed the manual. I became frustrated that parts weren’t coming off or apart as indicated in the manual. I ended up searching the machine and found the ACTUAL manual. The parts the included manual was telling me to take apart don’t actually come apart! No wonder I couldn’t get it! Uggh. The machine is hard to clean due this. The roller brush is supposed to be unscrewed to effectively clean it. I didn’t do this. The dirty water tank doesn’t come apart as indicated in the manual-you just have to pour water in the easy-drain hole, swish it around and dump it, but it’s not very effective. Overall for the price, ease of use, and great cleaning, I’d buy it again. But buyer beware.

- my carpets were dry-to-the-touch on a 25c day within 3 hours, fully dry in 5, after one wash and two rinses and one pass without water to suck it all up.
- the arm retracts to an angle (unlike any other budget cleaner) which makes it easier to operate.
- the solution nozzle has a manual release button (unlike other carpet cleaners) so you don’t waste solution automatically, and so you can rinse the solution out correctly, and so you can suck all the solution up and make the carpet dry quicker.
- it’s cute as a button and perfectly petite
- super easy to fill and empty
- bottom canister alerts you when to empty so you don’t overflow anything or break the machine.
Con’s:
- None - it’s so good it erased my awful ex.
Addressing other complaints of reviewers that almost put me off buying this gem, in the hopes others wont be turned off buying this marvel of a machine:
- “It’s Loud”. Who cares when it’s 7 times faster at what it does. I’ll take loud and efficiently effective over quiet and soul-destroyingly slow and ineffective any day of the week. Seriously bissell’s left my carpet wet for three days straight and didn’t even remove stains - that’s true inconvenience.
- “you have to empty and refill often” yes, because it’s working. Small machine small price - BIG quality. I’d rather walk back and forth once every 100sq feet than not have it work.
- “you have to unscrew the bottom part to clean the brush” FALSE. Unplug the machine, make sure your reservoirs for clean and dirty water are detached, then flip the machine on its side. Grab you a paper towel and swipe the underside above the brush. Job done babe. Quick and clean.
- “it’s so hard to clean” These people have trust funds - ignore their complaint. I cleaned mine in under three minutes. It was so easy I’m laughing at this complaint now.
- “the nozzle shield can’t be detached to clean” See that bit on the nozzle that says pull to detach? Yeah do that. Only don’t pull away from yourself. Stand above the machine, and pull up toward yourself gently. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
In short, if you need to clean your carpets - folk, I recommend this one.
Now THAT’S closure. 😉
