I’ve been using this knife for a few months now and it is great. I work on the line where it is non stop cutting and it holds up very well, after hours of use it does start to get uncomfortable due to the handle design but that is the only little complaint. It’s sturdy and sharp, needing the occasional run across the whetstone. Like all knifes it requires proper attention to keep it in its proper form. 9/10

I love this knife. Would buy it again, or even splurge for a more expensive version.

Reasons to buy the Mac Nakiri: 1. Often less than $100 on Amazon. This is a great price for this level of quality, fit, and finish. 2. If you have big hands, the handle will work better for you. 3. It is heavier and has a thicker blade stock. It's a better choice for heavier work like winter squash, pumpkin, gourds...

Reasons to choose the TOJIRO BASIC: 1. Smaller handle will feel more comfortable in smaller hands.
2. Lighter, thinner, slicier blade is a better choice for 90% of your work. 3. If you are on a budget, the Tojiro is a great knife, usually priced under $50.

These are both excellent nakiri. Same handle material, but the handle on the MAC is nicer looking with beautiful wood grain. The blade on the Mac is thicker, heavier, and slightly curved on the end, which might be better or worse depending on your personal preferences. Because the Tojiro is thinner and lighter, I worry that it will also be more fragile, but it will also slice more easily. Neither is super sharp out of the box.

I would call them very sharp, and I don't feel the need to sharpen them before using. But professionals may want to put an even keener edge on them.

I bought this knife on a recommendation from Cook's Illustrated. Chopping veggies can be remarkably challenging with a dull knife, onions especially. I've used chef's knives and Santoku knives in the past, the Santoku being my fave all purpose knife. But this is BY FAR my sharpest and best knife for veggies.

My previous knives have all been stainless steel, and that is the big difference here. The steel in this knife allows it to hold its sharp edge longer, and it can be sharpened more easily than stainless steel as well. However, the trade off is that you do need to care for it, as it WILL stain. Simply run the knife under water after using it on acidic items and wipe clean. Give it a good wash with soap and water by hand when done using it, dry it well, and put away. It's pretty simple. It's by far my favorite knife for veggies--I use my other knives for other purposes. I've had this knife since 2016, purchased here on Amazon and it still looks like new.

The only thing I didn't like about this knife when I received it is that it us not a full tang, the steel only goes about half way down the handle, but I have not had any issues with it. That also may keep it lighter in hand, so I'm sure its a trade off. This is NOT a bone and meat cleaver--it is light weight and razor sharp.

Oh my, this really is a great knife for veggies. Does exactly what is says it does. The horizontal finish on the bottom of the blade is very effective at not allowing the vegetable to stick to the upper portion of the knife. I've never seen anything work this well. Sharp? Whoa, very, very sharp. Blade is thin so you do need to be aware, but outside of that, appears to hold and edge well, with minor steeling. 2 things I did need to get up to speed on though, 1) Because the blade is so sharp and thin, scooping up the cut vegetables take a little practice. On my poly cutting boards, I do have to hit that angle just right. 2) It is a little on the small side from me, since my go to is a 10" Dexter chefs knife, but getting used to it. I don't like pulling out extra knifes for others tasks, but this work so surperior with veggies, I do pull it out. Once you get used to it, I think you'll like it.

Razor sharp out of the box and upon first use, effortlessly slide through veggies. I bought this Item at the recommendation of America's test kitchen after ruling out a santouko knife purchase. I was hesitant to purchase this knife due the less than desirable customer service reviews that I have read about the company and reports of corrosion in a short period of time. It seems to be a repeating them on other MAC product reviews also. However, I can't speak to these claims--just highlighting what I have read. Against my better judgement, I went ahead and purchased this knife on a whim as my new kitchen toy. The test of time and product durability will better reflect my product satisfaction. So, for now, I'm giving this 3 stars because in the short-term this is an awesome knife, but I am wary of the product's life based upon others reviews.

I ordered this Mac Vegetable Cleaver and the Mac 8 inch Chef's knife with the dimples. I had no experience using either kind of knife, but thought the cleaver style would be easier to use to chop large veggies like squash and potatoes. Today I used both knives to cut some big potatoes, and the dimples on the chef's knife made it much, much easier and faster to use than this style. It seems quite a bit sharper, too. I can see that I'm going to be using the Mac Knife 8 inch Hollow Edge Chef's Knife all the time instead of this knife. This is not a bad knife, but the Chef's knife is just way easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars 20 years later I need a new one

So I had one for 20+ years. The blade still cut fine (had never bothered to sharpen it), but the handle has a crack to the point where I finally had to buy a new one. But I think it was due to throwing it into the washing machine every day...just keep it away from the washing machine and this knife should last very long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent MAC knife--just as you'd expect.
Reviewed in Canada on April 18, 2018
Very good, sharp knife, just as you'd expect from Mac. As has been noted, you'll need to be somewhat more delicate in caring for this knife due to the steel from which it's crafted and the fine wood handle, but it is that excellent quality steel and craftsmanship which make this knife perform so well.

It should be noted that although the pictures depict this knife as having a matte finish, mine arrived highly polished to a mirror finish.
