So Far, Best Coffee Maker I have owned.

So Far, Best Coffee Maker I have owned.
I am giving Spinn a 4.5 Star rating because there is room for some improvements. As I will go into. This was a tough purchase for me. This coffee maker has a strong price tag and the concept of spinning was either brillant or a gimmick. After jumping into the purchae, I got the machine home and started the set up process. It had a minor setup snag but then completed the setup without issue. I then started making coffee. The coffiee is delicious and flavorful from cup one! At the time of this review, I have made 49 cups, each one is wonderful. The Spinn process of making coffee is from grinding the bean, to sending the grind into a sort of centrifuge. As the grind is spinning, the water is being sprayed onto the grind and the coffee is pulled from the grounds by the spinning. The results are that after making the coffee, the deposed grounds are near dry. What is also nice about Spinn is that is it app driven as well as manual. Nothing better than starting your cup from the bedroom. I am really enjoying the coffee that Spinn makes, however, I have found a few Spinn Cons:- The water reservoir needs to be larger. The Spinn flushes itself after every cup and after two mug sized coffee brews you will need to add water. Actually you add water pretty darn frequently. The Spinn has a low water sensor that will alert you to adding water and will not brew unless it has enough water for the brew. The reservoir is maybe 20oz in content.- Spinn has sensor for everything! EXCEPT if a cup is on the cradle. Why is this important? Remember me talking about the joy of starting you morning cup from bed? Well, you better have a cup in the cradle when you do this. Spinn makes coffee cup or no cup.- Alexa skill needs work. Difficult with Alexa unless you give the proper command. Only makes a cup a coffee from Alexa, no Mug or other type of brews.- Spinn app a bit basic. Does all you need but could add features like scheduled brew and more coffee brew choices.I plan on putting my Spinn through the longevity test. I will plan on doing a update as I take the maker through it paces.

**New Update 1/29/24 with Troubleshooting at the end!**

OK, buckle up: this is long, and I've only had the Spinn a week. TL;DR: if you can afford it and like using whole beans, just buy it.

My husband and I go through a lot of coffee. We buy whole-bean coffee from a friend who has a roasting side business, and we've used grind-n-brew machines for over 20 years. We had some Capresso machines, then a Gevi grind-n-brew that made good coffee, but only 10 cups at a time. So I bought a Galanz grind-n-brew with a 12-cup carafe this past summer, and I sort of hated it. The pot dribbles all the time, and the coffee it made was somehow not enjoyable.

Anyway, the Galanz was also annoying because its coffee bean reservoir was tiny (6.5 oz). I saw an ad for the Spinn and thought it might solve all my problems. Its bean reservoir holds 18 oz (!), and it can be plumbed in! No more filling the coffee pot at night! Its spent grounds reservoir holds a lot --- I'm not sure how much, but I don't have to empty it every day. Emptying it is a treat when I do have to empty it because the grounds are completely dry. So the Spinn lets me enjoy my coffee again. Also, I could get my electric kettle off the counter because the Spinn will dispense hot water, too! Afternoon tea made easy! I was pretty much sold when I saw that.

Set up was easy. And it makes great coffee. The espresso really tastes like espresso. Americanos are terrific. The coffee is strong and really good. We haven't tried cold brew, but I'm optimistic. (One review comments on the water not coming out hot enough and also that it spits water instead of streams....I think that person got a dud. That's not my experience at all.) The grinder is MUCH quieter than any of my old grind-n-brew machines, and you can actually have a conversation while it's going. I love the button functionality on the front so you don't have to use the app unless you want to. (Husband uses only the buttons even though it was easy to share the app functionality with him and with my visiting dad.) I use my old Nespresso milk frother to make a latte each morning, and it's terrific. I thought the app might annoy me, asking me to identify my coffee (which won't be possible due to where I get my coffee), but it hasn't. The "mug" of coffee is pretty strong, so I usually get an Americano after my latte, and it's just right. My husband has probably been over-caffeinating himself, but he's not unhappy.

On Dec. 26, my app couldn't connect to the Spinn for several hours. I sent a message to customer support, but they were off for the holiday. That night the Spinn somehow got itself back online, so I sent them another note, and they still got back to me first thing after the holiday. Notably, the Spinn still worked fine with the buttons on the front, so not all functionality was lost when it couldn't find my wifi.

I am working on getting the machine plumbed in and will report back when I do. It's going to be awesome. The 40 oz water reservoir hasn't been awful, but I know I'll love having it plumbed in.

I put my Galanz grind-n-brew in the basement. I will keep it around as a backup, and to use its burr grinder in emergencies (if I'm afraid we'll lose power, I grind some beans to have around to make ChemEx or French Press), but I hope I don't need to go back! One week into the Spinn experient, and I'm really happy. My houseguests just left, so I'll get a better sense of how often we actually need to empty/refill the grounds/beans reservoirs now that we're back to normal in the house. I'll post updates!

Update 1/18/23: we installed the water line (actually my contractor/handyman did it), and every time I hear it gurgle full of new water, I get a warm fuzzy feeling! It's terrific. I have to empty the grounds maybe every other day with our rather intense use, but it's no trouble. A couple days ago, it started complaining I needed to clean it. The cleaning solution is not cheap. I did a little research, and apparently there are alternatives on amazon, but for now I went ahead and paid the $32 plus $5 shipping because they do make it really easy from the app. Hopefully it gets here before Spinn gets really mad at me?

Spinn offered me some coffee credit to use in their online marketplace, so I bought some, and it was fine --- but way more expensive than my local roaster. (I pay $16/pound -- marketplace bags are 12 oz and $17-20 or more, plus $3 shipping.) Still, I love this machine and hope it keeps working this beautifully!

Update 7/16/23: there has been trouble in paradise, and my teenager calls this machine the Zion Williamson of coffee makers (Zion is a phenomenal basketball player but seems to be injured a lot), but we’re currently going strong. In February, less than two months into use, the “brewer basket” stopped spinning. It gave an error message and the nice people who help in the app gave me that diagnosis and told me I’d have to send it in. There was terrible winter weather between my house and Nevada, so the process took three weeks due to shipping delays. I hauled my Galanz up from the basement but was SO glad to get my Spinn back three weeks later. Then, in March, the same thing happened. Brewer basket stopped spinning. I had to ship it back. I was sad. And irritated. It took less than three weeks to get it back, but when it did get back, it had a problem. New error. It had been damaged in shipping, they said. (This is very similar to another reviewer’s experience, apparently.) So I negotiated for them to ship me a different machine and then I sent back the broken machine after the new one arrived and worked properly. (In the meantime I could still use the broken machine—its problem was just that it spit water into my cup before brewing.). The good news is that I haven’t had to send in this machine at all, and it’s been four months. But more on that below.

Cold brew update: the cold brew is amazing. I like the nitro-style the best. It does use a fair bit of water to cool down the system before brewing, so sometimes you’ll have to empty the drip tray once or twice but it’s not a problem. If I know we’re going to brew a lot of cold brew in the morning, I will go ahead and throw some ice cubes into the water reservoir. I have no idea if it helps or not, but it feels right. My go to morning drinks right now are either a cold brew with ice and milk or a regular 10 ounce mug of coffee. We have set our custom buttons to dispense 10 ounces of hot water, nitro cold brew, a regular 10 ounce mug of coffee, or a lighter 10 ounce mug of coffee. The “light“ 10 ounce mug of coffee is lighter because I have it set to use fewer grams of coffee. The customization features are really nice! Spinn recently updated the software so that you can program the three top buttons to be whatever you want, so I think will probably do that customization soon. Bottom line is that now you can have seven custom presets on the machine itself instead of four.

Update 1/29/2024: It's almost weird how worry-free this machine has been since our first few hiccups. I'm sorry to see there are a few folks here with bad customer service/return stories! We continue to use the Spinn HARD like the coffee addicts we are. We also use the hot water feature for hot tea and for instant oatmeal. It's terrific. The few "red circle of death" experiences we've had have been fixable by either cleaning the transport worm (if the brewer basket won't spin; see below) or unplugging the machine for 10 seconds. It works fine once it's plugged in.

Troubleshooting tips:

My second machine HAS had problems. But I have fixed it myself twice now and haven’t had to send it back. The BREWER BASKET wouldn’t spin (again), so I cleaned the “transport worm” using the internet’s directions. The worm (like a long flexible screw) was caked with grounds (even though I don’t use oily beans). I cleaned it, let it all air dry, then replaced the worm—and it worked! I was so relieved I didn’t have to return the thing. I really want Spinn to succeed here because we seriously love this coffee maker and I hate they’re wasting time and money shipping and repairing and making people crazy. Honestly, we love the machine so much, we almost bought a second on sale just to have a spare. And to make decaf. Note that I told Spinn about my discovery, so they’re hopefully telling people to clean the transport worm before sending it in now. This process has worked twice for me.

MAKE YOUR MUG FIT. It’s true that regular size mugs fit best. But my big mugs work too — they don’t go all the way in, but as long as the lip of the mug fits behind the spout, that’s all you need. My husband kind of tilts the bigger mugs into place, but it’s not necessary. I halfway want to buy one of their bespoke travel mugs to try out but haven’t yet.

FILLING PROBLEMS. When I got my “new” machine in March, I made the mistake of not filling the machine manually first and trying to let it fill on its own from empty. Turns out that’s a problem because it automatically stops filling after so many seconds so that it doesn’t overfill. Anyway, my mistake made the machine confused, and it wouldn’t refill. I chatted with the customer service people (completely demoralized because the machine was broken for a fourth time!) and they reset the system, and it was all better. Don’t make my mistake! Fill it manually the first time.

I had a Saeco Incanto automatic coffee maker for 3 or so years. Started to run into random issues. Cleaning it is a pain and drip tray/inside mechanism/post-ground dump gets disgusting fairly easily since it's almost always wet and damp. Hence, you have to clean it often to make sure it doesn't start smelling and molding.

Meet Spinn.

Likes:
- Love the much simpler design using centrifugal force to extract coffee. Not only does this make the mechanism simpler but coffee ground is a lot drier. Hence, cleaning everything is much simpler. Coffee seems good to me (I am not a coffee nut).
- Love that the frother comes off of the base without chord. Makes much easier to clean.

Dislikes:
- Frother is almost perfect - it's too small. We want to be able to use more milk to froth without constant overflow.

UPDATE:
I started to have issues. Coffee started to be extremely bitter no matter what I did. After messing with so many settings, resets, blaming the beans, etc, support finally had me ship the unit. I am not impressed with support. It turned out the power cable was defective. So, they replaced the power cable. Coffee tasted much better. After a month, coffee became very weak Beans we’re getting stuck and I have to move around the beans. $800 coffee maker, I am constantly shifting the stupid beans. But the coffee is still weak and i am convinced something is wrong with the machine but nobody In support has an answer- same stupid script: beans container too full (happens even half full), beans too oily, did you clean, choose right recipe, etc etc. I am so sick of it. Wasted days trying to troubleshoot it. Finally gave up on support.

I wanted to like this machine sooo badly because of the spin design. But the machine has too many quality issues (especially the hopper), and support doesn’t seem to care too much. They won’t just replace my unit since I clearly have a lemon.

[UPDATE] - Apr 22, 2024
- I am fairly certain I gave up a year of my life troubleshooting this thing. Infuriatingly frustrating.
- Support tells me bean basket that is half way full is still too full. What?!! So, it needs to be 1/5th full. It's ridiculous. It's clearly a design problem.
- I finally remove the plastic safety cover which was mostly the problem. Now, beans only gets stuck maybe 1% of the time instead of 50%.
- Today, drip tray indicator says to empty it. I empty the liquid. The indicator will not shut off and I can't make coffee. I have tried to clean the metallic sensor of the drop tray, rebooted the machine, power cycle, etc..etc. Nothing!

Tried so many times for the company to replace mine since I bought it. It's clearly a prototype or lemon with all of the problems I ran into. Faulty power cable, bean stuck (with any beans), random errors that make no sense, clean indicator doesn't away after cleaning, and now drip tray full indicator won't go off.
