Not Just for Potatoes! 10 Year UPDATE!
I purchased these Swiss Peelers in 2013 and gave two away as gifts. I am now back to purchase a second set, not because I need to, but because I want to have it on hand for when the original blade becomes dull. Unlike the other reviewers, I have had no problems with the blade dulling or rusting at all. However, I have never once placed mine in the dishwasher! I always just rinse with water and mild dish soap and dry it immediately. The blade has held up nicely and is still very, very, sharp! I have used it not just for peeling potatoes, (including sweet potatoes), but for shredding carrots and cabbage into nice ribbon like strands. Overall I highly reccomend these peelers for the home cook!Grade A+

For those who work in the food industry, this one is an essential.

Common complaints: Blade rusts, awkward to use, feels cheap.
Response:
1.) The blade rusts because the peeler is not made of stainless steel. As someone else has already pointed out, it's carbon steel which requires more care (rinse/wash & wipe try with a kitchen towel right away) to prevent rusting. However, this makes the Kuhn Rikon peelers MUCH sharper. They also keep their edge longer than your normal metal swivel head peeler that most people are used to seeing.
2.) For new users, the kuhn rikon peeler can feel quite awkward because its Y-shape means that it is best for certain things. In the restaurant business, peeling 10gallons of potatoes for mash happens every couple days and this is the peeler to do it. The Y-peeler is best for certain tasks and requires a certain grip and technique. It takes some getting used to but once you've got it down, you'll be going through apples and potatoes like no one's business.
3.) These peelers aren't meant to be kept for years unless of course you only peel a few veggies a year. For the product intended use, these are plenty sturdy, can be thrown around, used, abused and still stay sharper for longer. Many prep cooks go through one of these every couple months just because of the sheer volume of food they prepare. So, with professional wear and tear, you're not going to keep them around forever. The reason why cooking professionals are generally so satisfied with these is that the Kuhn Rikons are the best peelers when considering working efficiency, durability and price.

Summary: If you're a home cook who only peels an apple as a snack and a few potatoes for dinner every few days, you might not want to bother with getting used to a different kind of peeler and the slightly higher maintenance. BUT if you're in the food industry, you know that you can't find what the Kuhn Rikon peelers have to offer anywhere else.

These are the standard in many a professional kitchen for a reason. They're sharp, comfortable enough to peel a 50 pound sack of potatoes, and compact enough for a drawer with a big ole hole for a tool rack peg. The blade takes off thin layers, so you're not wasting the product (but thick enough that the potato peels can go in a fryer and be oh so tasty).

I'm not a huge fan of the translucent oval ones, the opaque rounded rectangle handle seems more sturdy and feels better in my hands, but I have quite large ones. If you don't like whatever handle you got, try the other style, I'm sure they make both for a reason.

Caveat: It is a high carbon blade that needs care. It WILL rust on you if you don't take care of it, same as a real wok or a cast iron pan. Wash or rinse off immediately after use, and thoroughly shake or towel dry after and this peeler will take care of you for years with no fuss.

Easiest vegetable peelers. This is my second batch of these and my wife and I love them. They’re so easy to use and do a great job peeling. I volunteer to peel carrots and potatoes when my wife is cooking and sometimes even peel the celery before cutting it which is really nice for raw celery sticks you’re going to eat with dip or hummus. They do start to get dull after a couple years of near daily use but are inexpensive to replace.

I recently started using the Swiss Peeler and, for the most part, I really like it. The design is ergonomic, and it peels fruits and vegetables effortlessly. However, I've noticed that the blades tend to rust easily, which is a bit disappointing. Aside from this issue, it's a handy tool in the kitchen, and I hope the rusting can be addressed in future versions.

Esse descascador é sensacional! Trabalho em cozinha profissional e ele atende muito bem todas as necessidades. É importante lembrar que a lâmina é de aço carbono, então sempre tem que lavar e secar bem para não enferrujar. Uma vez esqueci molhado, mas foi só fazer uma mistura de vinagre e bicarbonato que já resolveu o problema.
