"An indispensable resource for women of all ages, this is a guide to help us better connect to ourselves, to value ourselves, to love ourselves, and ultimately, to be ourselves."
—Chelsea Clinton

Positive body image isn’t believing your body looks good; it is knowing your body is good, regardless of how it looks.

  • How do you feel about your body?
  • Have you ever stayed home from a social activity or other opportunity because of concern about how you looked?
  • Have you ever passed judgment on someone because of how they looked or dressed?
  • Have you ever had difficulty concentrating on a task because you were self-conscious about your appearance?

Our beauty-obsessed world perpetuates the idea that happiness, health, and ability to be loved are dependent on how we
look, but authors Lindsay and Lexie Kite offer an alternative vision. With insights drawn from their extensive body image research, Lindsay and Lexie—PhDs and founders of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined (and also twin sisters!)—lay out an action plan that arms you with the skills you need to reconnect with your whole self and free yourself from the constraints of self-objectification.

From media consumption to health and fitness to self-reflection and self-compassion, Lindsay and Lexie share powerful and practical advice that goes beyond “body positivity” to help readers develop body image resilience—all while cutting through the empty promises sold by media, advertisers, and the beauty and weight-loss industries. In the process, they show how facing your feelings of body shame or embarrassment can become a catalyst for personal growth.

Editorial Reviews

Review

More Than a Body is a welcome salve for those who are weary of the internal war with their body. Through their groundbreaking body image resilience model, Lexie and Lindsay offer many practical ways to make peace with your body, showing how body image disruptions can be a pathway for healing, rather than provoke a descent into a shame spiral. Ultimately, readers will find real solutions to reunite with their whole, embodied selves.” —Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN, co-author of Intuitive Eating “Loving yourself is easier said than done. I’ve been trying for years. There’s more to it than following a bunch of body-positive Instagram accounts or saying nice things to yourself in the mirror. Thankfully, Lindsay and Lexie have written a step-by-step guide on how to dismantle self-objectification and develop a positive body image. This is the perfect book for someone who wants to change their outlook but doesn’t know where to start.” —Nikki Glaser, comedian, TV host, and host of the podcast You Upwith Nikki Glaser “As an expert immersed in this field for decades, it is rare that I come across writing that causes me to reflect differently on my own body—but More Than a Body does so powerfully. The Kite sisters’ work is not trite self-help or body positivity clichés; it is masterfully crafted research and real-life experience that represents a crucial step forward in our culture’s understanding of bodies and beauty ideals. The world needs this book.” —Lindo Bacon, PhD, researcher and author of Radical Belonging, Body Respect, and Health at Every Size “Lindsay and Lexie are the wise, thoughtful, patriarchy-smashing older sisters that every girl and woman needs in their life. In More Than a Body, they meticulously dissect the deluge of messaging that says we should tie our worth to our appearance—and then they blow all of it apart. They inspire us all to imagine what more we can be and what more we can do when we are able to take up all the space we need in this world.” —Virginia Sole-Smith, author of The Eating Instinct: Food Culture, Body Image, and Guilt in America “Lindsay and Lexie have a way of weaving you back through your own experiences, but this time, with an entirely new lens on the why. Packed with facts, science, and the truth about the distortions in media, this book brought me feelings of purpose, safety, and the good kind of desire to fight when it comes to existing in a body in today’s world. Lindsay and Lexie tell stories many of us could have written ourselves and unpack just how good and okay we are and have always been.” —Sarah Nicole Landry, writer, The Birds Papaya “This book could save your life. In a lively and engaging style, Lindsay and Lexie discuss the grave harm caused by self-objectification and offer remedies that encourage resilience. A most welcome addition to the literature on body image.” —Jean Kilbourne, feminist activist, media critic, author, and creator of the film series “Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women”

About the Author

Dr. Lexie Kite is identical twin sisters with Dr. Lindsay Kite. They both received PhDs from the University of Utah. Their academic research on media studies and body image inspired them to establish the non-profit Beauty Redefined in 2009 (while concluding their co-written master’s thesis and beginning their doctoral research) to help a greater number of females recognize and reject harmful messages about their bodies, worth, and potential, and redefine the meaning and value of beauty in their lives. Since then, Lexie and Lindsay have become leading experts in body image resilience and media literacy—authors of numerous studies and books have cited their original research—and have been featured in a variety of national media outlets. Today, they continue to build on their academic work and the passion it stoked for helping girls and women through Beauty Redefined’s online Body Image Resilience Program and course facilitator training, blogging, social media activism, and regular speaking engagements for thousands of people of all ages in both secular and religious settings, from universities and high schools to church congregations and community organizations.

Amazing, researched book!
I couldn’t put this book down. Very insightful, well-researched, and carefully constructed. You can tell that the authors, Lindsay and Lexie, put thought into every sentence. This book is teaching me that my body is an INSTRUMENT to complete my mission in life (my greater purpose) not an Ornament to be looked at. I’m learning how to focus on how I FEEL rather than how I look because of this!Great book, definitely recommend.

I can't even begin to express in words how mind-blowingly powerful, eloquent and truthful this books is. What an incredibly important work Lindsay and Lexi are doing. As a mother of teenage girls, no words can express how pivotal and desperately needed their message is! But not just for women only, MEN NEED TO READ THIS BOOK TOO! EVERYONE needs to read this book! I can imagine a society where all women embodied the principles in this book and our society embraced this ideal and we as women KNEW it was truth. It would just be INCREDIBLE. It's a world where women are powerful, strong, never the victim, confident, sure, healthy and beautiful, NO MATTER HOW WE LOOK. It would be a society without pornography and abuse. It would be a world with compassion for all. This book gives self-esteem back to women. It gives us our bodies back. It allows us to feel worthy and happy no matter how we look. THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING EVERYTHING! Please please keep pushing your message, Lindsay and Lexi and I am about to share it with everyone I know.

I am a man, and read this because I know one of the authors, and I am very glad I did. This book is incredibly academic in content yet presents all material so anyone can understand what they are saying. Dr. Kite and Dr. Kite helped me to better understand the influence of others on how I view and respect myself. This work has helped me find greater respect for my wife while helping me better empathize with some many of her problems.

Thank you Lindsay and Lexi for helping me be a better man.

I stumbled upon Lexie’s and Lindsay’s work on Instagram shortly after having to get my gall bladder out, which followed only 4 short months after having my first baby. I had to have an emergency C section so pair that with having another surgery, I felt that my body was a failure. It had failed me giving birth, and it had failed me during the recovery process. I felt defeated. Thankfully Lexie and Lindsays work helped me realize that my body, what it looks like and sometimes how it works (or doesn’t) doesn’t define my worth as a woman and mother.
When I knew they were coming out with a book I knew I had to get; it became the first thing on my Christmas wishlist.

I am loving the book! They have journal prompts and have created very thought provoking work that has started to help me get out of the slump of being harsh on my body image. I have recommended this book to so many dear friends who have confided in me with similar issues. I highly recommend this!

Really gratified to read the justified take down of the body-positive movement, which has been another way for us to look at yet more bodies and pass judgement on ourselves. Being defined by our appearances has caused all women to live in a prison with invisible bars. You can’t see it til you’ve seen it, and these sisters will show it to you. The first step in healing your body, food and exercises issues is discovering that you are not a “thing”. Not a thing to be stared at, adored, repulsed by or obsessed over. The sisters will help you dismantle your internal objectification. The next step is to learn how to feel from the inside, and to value your body’s feedback system when making decisions about movement and nourishment. Get off the scale. Get rid of the showy clothes. Go inside yourself and feel from the inside out just how good your incredible body is. Grateful this book was written and hope it gets the traction it deserves. Each of my daughters will get a copy.
PS. Our obsession over our appearances is a tool of the patriarchy. It keeps us broke, miserable and impotent in the world. Always chasing the “better version” of ourselves which is somewhere out there in the future. It keeps us eternally dissatisfied with THIS moment, this body, this experience of life as and through a body. Take back your body from the hungry eyes of culture, sisters!

Lexie and Lindsay get it. If we are not able to change the objectifying culture in our lifetimes, then we have to do the internal work-back to what we knew to be true when we were born: that our worth is not our appearance. This book helps me understand how to do that. I will probably re-read sections of this book throughout my life to continue doing the work. Or maybe attempt a PhD like Lindsay and Lexie. x-D

I would love to know more about how to help our kids who are coming to terms with the culture and what it says about their worth. The book touches on this in a few sections but I would love more on this. For example, my daughter's preschool teachers frequently compliment the girls in their class on how beautiful/cute/pretty they or their dress, hair, bows, etc. are, while the boys witness this. Sending the message to the boys and girls alike that the most important thing about the girls is their appearance. I would love research-based resources to communicate with the teachers on why this is harmful, and realistic ways they can work to adjust their communication. Not everyone is going to read an entire book, though that won't stop me from pitching this one. :)

This book will challenge how you feel about and value yourself. Our society objectifies women and values them mostly on their outward appearance. This is so unhealthy and can lead to depression. Reading this book reminded me that I am not just a physical being meant to decorate the planet. I am a whole person with worth regardless of what I appear to be on the outside. I'm 59 and have been contemplating a facelift but I think I'll wait...

This book has opened my eyes to alot of things objectification, social media influences we have been brainwashed into thinking appearances are the key to happiness. That we must stay on this journey of constantly making our bodies fit into a social acceptable box. New diets new beauty products. So if you are fed up of blaming your self for it being able to live up to today beauty standards read this book it will give you a new perspective then hopefully we can teach the next generation of girls that they are not just ornaments to be looked at they are so much more than that
