I love my foodcycler, I use it almost everyday, me and my family go through a ton of fruit and veggies and I hated to waste the 'waste'. I own a small florist shop (lilliewild.com) so I need all the fertilizer I can get and this device makes it so easy. The filters say they last about 3 months but mine lasted longer, they are super easy to replace and makes a huge difference in oder. They are worth the money and the fertilizer the machine produces is incredible and rewarding.

These carbon filters are essential for the Vitamix Food Cycler and need to be changed every 3-4 months - which can become a bit expensive at $30 per package. That's basically $120/yr to operate your food cycler. I did try washing out a set while I waited for the new ones to arrive but could still smell the food odour - so yes, you need to change these consistently. The plastic container of the carbon pellets is not recyclable so it has to go in your garbage. You can try cutting off the top and placing the food pellets in a compost or in your outdoor soil but it's kind of difficult to get the top off. These carbon filters are very effective in capturing the food odour.
