In our next SIGGRAPH 2024 paper, "A Dynamic Duo of Finite Elements and Material Points," co-authored with researchers from UCLA, CMU, the University of Utah, and the Toyota Research Institute, we introduce a unified simulation framework for digital clothing and fluid flows within complex environments. Traditional simulations of deformable bodies, such as clothing, hair, and soft tissues, typically employ the finite element method, which discretizes the material into a network of interconnected elements. Conversely, simulations of fluids and granular flows often rely on Eulerian methods, solving the flow field across a predefined spatial grid. Our paper tackles the challenging yet intriguing task of integrating these divergent methodologies without compromising simulation performance or fidelity. We propose a novel coupling strategy that utilizes asynchronous time-splitting. This technique allows our simulator to effectively and efficiently handle the dynamic interactions between digital clothing and various environmental elements, including windy air, water, sand, snow, and even lava 😝 . We believe this work opens new avenues for the practical application of digital clothing, especially the simulation of protective clothing in extreme environments. The latest version of Style3D Studio already includes a basic thermal analysis feature based on heat diffusion through air, with further enhancements expected soon. #SIGGRAPH #VFX #digitalfashion #Style3D #digitalart
