The "CLP Energy For Brighter Tomorrows Award 2024", organised by the HKFYG and sponsored by CLP Power Hong Kong was successfully held and recognised 20 outstanding young individuals who have bravely overcome various life challenges, including #family crises, illnesses, #life adjustments, and emotional distress. The ceremony was officiated by distinguished guests, including Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing; President of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Clarence Leung Wang Ching, Under Secretary of the Home and Affairs Bureau. Three award-winning and inspiring youth also shared their inspiring stories of #resilience and personal #growth. One of the award recipients, Khan Bibi Aisha Lachica who is of Filipino and Pakistani descent shared the challenges she faced and overcame. Although born and raised in Hong Kong in fluent #Cantonese, she has faced various levels of #discrimination due to her appearance. After transferring to a new school, most of her Pakistani classmates communicated in Urdu, and she could only use Chinese and English, making it difficult for her to integrate. She felt out of place in different social groups and was troubled but had no one to confide in. Ultimately, she decided to focus on her studies to the best of her ability, while also hoping to change society's perception of her and other ethnic minorities. She actively participated in #community activities, striving to promote racial #integration. This year's program theme, "Dance of Light and Water, Inspiring the Limitless," highlighted the flexibility and determination demonstrated by the awardees in finding their paths to success amid adversity. Their journeys serve as beacons of hope, encouraging other young people to pursue their dreams and make #positive contributions to society courageously. The HKFYG and CLP Power Hong Kong have a long-standing #partnership in nurturing the resilience and holistic development of young people. Through initiatives like this, we aim to empower the next generation to become pillars of the community, shining brightly and inspiring others. #lifechallenges #positivity #youthsupport

If you could volunteer anywhere and for any project, what would you choose? Nicole Lam, a Form 5 student, said she would love to take #underprivileged children on trips outside of Hong Kong. "Many of these children come from low-income families and have limited opportunities to explore the world. During #volunteering programmes, I've seen how much they enjoy visiting new places within Hong Kong, so an overseas trip would be incredibly meaningful for them," she said. Nicole first gained experience in volunteering during her primary school days with various non-profit organisations. Her dedication and passion for community service have grown stronger since joining the HKFYG volunteering network. One of Nicole's most #impactful experiences was participating in HKFYG's online tutoring activity, where she and other volunteers helped younger students with their homework. Despite language barriers, as some students used Chinese while Nicole's school language is English, she demonstrated adaptability and resourcefulness in finding effective ways to communicate and provide academic assistance. Nicole's favourite HKFYG volunteer programme is the Chinese New Year delivery. During the pandemic, when large gatherings were restricted, she and her fellow volunteers delivered food supplies to residents, who were deeply appreciative of their thoughtful gestures. Through her volunteer experiences, Nicole has developed invaluable #communication skills. "When I was tutoring, I encountered a little kid who didn't like to talk much. I felt quite discouraged at the time, wondering why he didn't want to talk to the volunteers. But later, I gradually understood that since he was still just an elementary school student, he was shy and needed time to get comfortable around unfamiliar volunteers. These experiences have made me more empathetic and patient when dealing with people of different age groups." The HKFYG is proud to support and celebrate the achievements and growth of young volunteers like Nicole, and you can also become a #community changemaker! Have you ever wondered how deeply AI is integrated into our daily lives, often without us even realising it? During her MTR commute, Professor Helen Meng of The Chinese University of Hong Kong pondered this very question, sparking a journey that led to the creation of Hong Kong's first comprehensive AI curriculum for secondary schools. In an interview with #YouthHongKong, Professor Meng and her team share how they developed a pioneering AI curriculum aimed at pre-tertiary students. Launched in 2019 under the CUHK The Hong Kong Jockey Club AI for the Future Project, this initiative introduces young minds to AI, big data, machine learning, and ethical considerations, preparing them for a future shaped by technology. The curriculum’s innovative approach involves interactive e-learning platforms and extensive teacher support, ensuring that AI concepts are taught in an engaging and accessible manner. It’s not just about learning to use technology, but understanding and critically thinking about its impact on society. As students learn more about AI, Professor Meng said, "They must understand that technology is not perfect, and that it will not dictate their lives. They need to know what AI can and cannot do, when AI may fail, when AI may not meet expectations, and when AI can be misused and cause harm. By gaining this understanding, students can approach AI with a balanced and informed perspective." More than 84.6% of #DSE takers said they would increase consideration of choosing college majors that are less threatened by #AI, according to the HKFYG’s survey amid the upcoming exam results release on 17 July. The survey, conducted by The HKFYG’s DSE 27771112, an education #counselling service for students undertaking Hong Kong university entrance exams collected 513 DSE candidates and 802 prospective exam candidates’ thoughts on their outlook on academic and career future. Regarding the rising AI development and application, 65.8% of students interviewed admitted they lacked an understanding of AI-related information. During the press briefing, a student also shared concerns over how his #academic interest and passion, which is a media-related major, could be affected by AI as it automates more content creation work as time goes on. 41.5% of current DSE candidates found it very difficult to plan their further studies and #career development and more than half aimed for a bachelor’s degree, while 21.2% aimed for a master's degree. To facilitate DSE takers planning their academic advancement, DSE 27771112 has extended the hours of its support services including hotline and online counselling from 10 am to 2 am during the exam result release period in July. If you are feeling stressed about the upcoming exam result release or in doubt about your future planning, please don't hesitate to talk to us through our website: http://27771112.hk #mentalhealth #youthempowerment #exam

As we rely on technology more and more, it's crucial to reflect on the path we're taking. When AI becomes smarter, Professor Paul Cheung from The University of Hong Kong cautions us about the “Operator Trap” - a risk of losing critical thinking and reducing our roles to merely machine operators. In an interview with Youth Hong Kong, Professor Cheung shares his journey from encountering AI in its infancy to witnessing its explosive growth fueled by data, computational power, and global interest. He draws parallels between the AI revolution and previous industrial and information revolutions, highlighting the potential benefits and pitfalls. As for the next generation of young people, he emphasised the role of all-rounded education in equipping them to think, learn and adapt. "The long-term goal of education in an age of rapid technological progress should be teaching young people how to learn," he said. "After acquiring the fundamental know-how, we should encourage them to broaden their horizon, acquire just-in-time knowledge and adapt, because the knowledge itself can become outdated in the blink of an eye." The HKFYG is dedicated to encouraging local youth to deepen their understanding of China's long and storied history and #cultural development. Since 2011, the HKFYG has been hosting the annual China Week, with the primary goal of helping young individuals develop a deeper understanding of their Chinese #identity within a #global context. This year, the event focuses on the enchanting #Huafu, or traditional Chinese outfits. The China Week kicked off today with a special theme - "Unveiling the Secrets of Huafu". Local student participants had the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance and artistic elements of traditional Chinese attire, exploring how these timeless fashions embody the essence of Chinese sartorial heritage. Exhibitions, workshops, fashion shows, and expert talks are planned throughout the week-long event, inviting the public to immerse themselves in the splendour of China's storied #textile traditions. China Week also hosted the Cheongsam #Design Competition where students submitted their creative designs of traditional Chinese outfits. The Form 4 student Jessie Wong Ho Tung from the New Territories Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School won the championship in the competition. As a student who did not study the Visual Arts subject, she was pleasantly surprised and felt honoured to have won the award. She mentioned that she was inspired by the history of the Chinese Cheongsam, and therefore chose the Nushu, China’female-only language and bamboo leaves as the design elements. "The slender and curved Nushu font is similar to the bamboo leaves which are known as 'gentlemen among flowers', symbolising that women can be both the romantic beauties in poems and the celebrated gentlemen." Through this, she aimed to convey the theme of female #empowerment. The second place was awarded to the Form 3 students from the Heung Hoi Ching Kok Lin Association Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School. They said that their design concept was inspired by #landscape paintings. With all the landscape patterns on the Cheongsam hand-drawn, They hoped to break the stereotypical notion that the Cheongsam is old-fashioned. They felt honoured and grateful for the recognition of their work. Plan Your Visit: 4-8 July 2024, 10:00-16:00 Website: https://lnkd.in/gQZT-dDZ #youthempowerment #chinatradition #cheongsam #huafu
